That makes sense, thanks. But because I don’t know the exact number of files missing, how will they know if they need to keep looking? I asked the guy that and he said they would do a raw scan of the drive and if they are there they will find them.

Lol no. It worked again today with that adapter thing though. It would still shut off after about 20 minutes. It's cool though because it would let me just hit resume and it would pick up where it left off on the transfer. It quit altogether eventually though. I could tell it was the cable and not the HD so that's good. I ordered a different kind today so we'll see.........

I know for a fact the files are there because I could see them (and even copy some) with a different type of adapter. The problem was it would disappear after about 20 minutes. The drive wasn’t even listed anymore. It would come back after about 10 minutes but my file transfers would always get interrupted from it disappearing.

I did say that. You're not crazy! lol. I erased it though because I was a dummy apparently and didn't give it enough time to show up. Sometimes it shows up in disk management, sometimes it doesn't. Right now it's not. I ran a repair and it appeared to be stuck, but after about an hour it said it was successfully repaired. It's not showing up again though. I wonder if it's a hardware issue. I would think not but who knows. (I am administrator of both HDs.) I'm going to try and reboot again and let you know. Oh yeah! It showed up in the BIOS once but it completely froze up and wouldn't let me do anything. It's SO frustrating because it hasn't done the same thing twice hardly. It's diff every time.

It shows up in the OS but it disappears after about 20 minutes. When I hooked it up directly to the computer it said it needed to be initialized but of course I didn't do this. It finally appeared correctly when I hooked it to the adapter. Somebody told me you could right click, properties, security, advanced, and then take "ownership" of the drive, but there were like 4 or 5 profiles there and I didn't know which one to click.

I'm not sure what UEFI or RMA is. The last time I went to the BIOS it was there. I can check again though. I'm running Error Checking under properties at the moment. It's gone about 25% of the way and has been stuck there for about 15 minutes.

More specifically it says, you must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it. Then it says, use the following partition style for the selected disks: Master Boot Record or GUID Partition Table. After that it says, Note: The GPT partition style is not recognized by all previous versions of Windows.

Ok so I tried hooking up two different old hard drives. One of them showed up along with my other drives, and the other one I had to go to Disk Management to find it. The one in DM said it had to be "initialized" first. No idea what that means but it sounds like a bad idea. And then the one with all my other drives said it needed to be formatted before it could be used.

Ok let me see if I can answer your questions. If I'm not understanding something correctly please let me know. I'm building a new, totally virgin, PC tonight. I'll post my parts list when I'm done typing this. My old PC is OLD. Maybe like 7 or 8 years old. It's running Windows 7. All the things you suggested I do with it would be impossible because of the state it's in. If I try to open anything, control panel for instance, it takes several minutes. That's per click! It is basically unusable at this point. Is it ok to do all those things after it's hooked up to the new PC? Also, I'm VERY embarrassed to admit this part, it's a long boring story but about a year ago I was trying to make a copy of all my pictures to another partition but accidentally copied it to the same drive. There's more to it than that but in short, I have 2 TB total that now is completely filled up except for a few gig or so. Maybe less, I can't remember.
