Upkeep of a hackintosh machine?

My mom currently has a Mac from 2011 and it's showing its age, mainly due to the hard drive being full. I know I could probably just swap the storage in there, but I think for longevity it would be nice to have some newer parts. However, like many older parents, she knows little about troubleshooting technology problems. So my question is how difficult is it to keep a hackintosh going? I'll be at college soon and won't be close to always help. Thanks for any help!

Hackintosh projects aren't easy to keep up when it comes to updates, but newer Macs lack upgrade potential. I would suggest going to a dedicated hackintosh forum
