Helping a friend build a pc over the phone, hes got a cpu and dram debug light but we have narrowed it down to the motherboard or cpu, one thing we noticed is without the cpu only the cpu light comes on, is there any way to tell which is faulty?

  • How old is the system?
  • Did he over-clock?
  • Has the system been subjected to a power surge?
  • Does he have a cute sister?
  • Has he tried 1 stick of RAM at a time?
  • Did he try cleaning the RAM contacts with a soft white pencil eraser so they are shiny and not dull?

Warlock is right, a parts lists is very much needed for us to try and help you in any way we can. You can make a parts list on this very website as it lists old hardware that doesn't have a price anymore or has been discontinued so people can make a parts list of their old hardware and list it in their threads.

As for the CPU, allegedly CPU's should be good for a minimum 20 years... however people do things that may lessen the life of a CPU such as over-clocking. The hotter it runs the less its lifespan.

A motherboard on the other hand once its over 3 years old is on borrowed time, some motherboards capacitors swell, rust, corrode, burst and let out the magic smoke as it were.

Clean your RAM and try again, one more time... you'd be surprised how much a little bit of grime/corrosion on the contacts can prevent a system acting as it should.

  • brand new never posted
  • no
  • no
  • no
  • yes both of his sticks where tested in different slot at different time
  • no but even without ram installed he gets the cpu and dram debug lights and also its brand new

All of the lights and fans where spinning and he went over all connections, reseated the cpu and cmos battery. He bought the parts through amazon so hes returning the motherboard tomorrow and if that doesn't fix it then the cpu.

Realistically, without a reference/spare system/parts to test against, No.
