Outdated PSU's?

Buildtimeboys

This question came up recently regarding the SeaSonic S12II 520W and the EVGA Supernova G2 550W. Another poster was saying that these two PSU's are no longer suitable for use in new builds as "the internal design is old and not for modern PCs." I thought this was odd, but I admit I really don't know the details of PSU's and have been relying on reviews for PSU recommendations.

Is this the case? If so, at what point does a PSU become obsolete?

(The reviews I've been using are from JonnyGuru, KitGuru, and HardwareInsights.)

There is nothing outdated or old about the G2. The S12II, sure.

Whoever said that about the G2 is a out right idiot. The G2 is still a top of the line unit. For the S12II it definitely could be augured so since it lacks OTP, its group regulated, and it doesn't support C6/C7 power states.

DON"T DRILL HOLES IN IT!!

ahem...

Anyway, good to know. That sucks though, as the S12II was the only PSU I had for that price point.

Assuming you are in the US this is what you should get instead.

What Orion said...

The one who told you the EVGA G2 is old and not suitable for new builds is an ignorant..... It is without a doubt one of the best 550 watts unit..

The G2 SuperNOVA is not outdated, it’s still one of the best units out there.

The SeaSonic? Yeah. It lacks OTP and is 8 years old.

To be fair, the quote was referring to the S12II, the G2 was just "old" not "unsuitable."
