Anandtech has a mini review up either.

Well, taking in all the reviews that have spawned this morning the RX 480 8gb card is exactly where AMD claimed it would be. $240 for a card that pretty much matches performance with cards going for $300+. I can't wait to see crossfire reviews!

I think Toms Hardware's conclusion puts it best out of all of the reviews.

I hope those who feel disappointed come to understand that this is an 8gb, $240 card. The nearest card in performance is the GTX 970 with half the memory followed by the 390 8gb card. In most reviews the 480 managed to surpass either the 970 and the 390, and in some games both. Again... for $240. I think this is a pretty big win for AMD, though I can tell by comments on every review site that they have a LONG way to go to grab any real mind share. There is a lot of hate out there. But this card is a great step in the right direction.

TDP is my only real complaint and it is a small one. 150w just seems high, specially compared to the GTX 1070 at the same TDP. But compared to the 250w 390 its a nice reduction in power consumption for similar performance.

Besides TDP I'm pretty impressed with this card. AMD seems to have a midrange winner on their side.

Not to mention that for most of the benchmarks at 1080 the 4GB 480 is within a few frames of the 8GB version. Meaning that if you plan on gaming at 1080p you can spend just $200.

That is an excellent point. $200 for a card that's at the front lines with the 390 and GTX970. That's beyond impressive for me.

AND it makes me even more excited to see what the AIB cards are going to be. mmmmm I'm actually hoping for a Sapphire Toxic OC card.

Did he just break the NDA and use old drivers?

  • 1 point

Not sure, apparently its the wrong drivers.

  • 1 point

Well, since the NDA ended 5 minutes ago, the tech sites will now scramble to post their reviews.

He did break the NDA but he didn't know because it didn't specify the time apparently.

Not proper drivers so performance will improve, as well as with aftermarket cards.

So about what we expected, a $200 card that gets the performance of a R9 390 and GTX 970, which were $300 cards. Looks to me as if the RX 480 is the new king of 1080p gaming.

I think for 1440p too, I will be getting one and getting a 1440p monitor for it too. Considering most games were max settings and were getting 30fps+ apart from Assassins creed Syndicate, I will take that for the price. I'm in the UK and I don't think It is going to be worth the price to start with because it will be higher than normal because of the £ :(

  • 1 point

Very true. If you are okay with 30 fps, and there is nothing wrong with that, it seems the card will work at 1440p as well. Plus with some setting tweaks you could more then likely start pushing near 60 fps and still look damn good.

Yup.

Im' not obsessed with maxing all games in 1440p, even the mid-high details works for me, because in a lot of cases you can't tell the difference between ultra vs high for example :) Maxing all details on 1080p shouldn't be a problem for RX 480, but on 1440p I'm ok with lowering some settings in some games... just my thoughts.

  • 1 point

Me too, but I'm concerned wither or not to even go with 1440p or would I prefer max settings 1080p...

  • 1 point

I don't know. I'm planing to buy 1440p monitor, because the more pixels... is more beautiful :D So if RX 480 can 60fps games (again, don't need all max details) in 1400p I'm going to be super happy, if now 1080 is still standard and is still great so it's a win-win for me :)

We only have a few benchmarks but I think this card is a winner for AMD. I think a lot of people, like myself, are still 1080p gamers and will be for the foreseeable future. This card is $200 and looks like it will max out games at 1080p for some time to come. I and many others got $200 GTX 960 or R9 380 because they were 1080p cards for a good price. Now unless NVidia launches a $200 card to match the 480, AMD is going to have a large segment on lock down.

Great for AMD.

About time aswell. I hope ZEN is a success, I want to go with it.

Even with 4k you can play on medium, source.

  • 1 point

Meh...

Not at the card, because that is still impressive. Just if you have the money for a decent 4k monitor you have the coin for a more powerful GPU.

  • 1 point

Yeah, 1440p is highest I would go. Maybe 3440x1440.

Is it just me or are these reviewers not keen on getting a stock cooler 970?
