Description

I think my build is getting flagged as a fake,... so here is a re-post with a few more pics. This is not the final build. I built it up because it was killing me to look at all the parts boxed up. i am still waiting on more parts for water cooling so i will be tearing it all down and rebuilding when all parts are in. managed a stable OC @ 4.5Ghz with just a corsair cpu cooler. topped out at 80C though. bios 'A' on R5E was not working as well as 'B' for some reason(not saving my settings), so i will be replacing the board also. tons of water cooling parts on the way. will post build progress pics and final over the next few weeks. good ones,... sorry just had to post all these to prove that this is not a fake. including my messy desk and build station.

"I think my build is getting flagged as a fake"

I think your desk is FAKE!!! :)

I say go for it. So many people complain about how a user spends their money. IF spending $10K on a computer is your thing, who cares? Cars, clothes, food, housing, who cares? Or even saving your money, who cares?

If this gives you satisfaction, I say go for it 110%. The only person you need to report to is your self.

Ask yourself, If I had $10K, what would I do with it? You don't have to answer the question, because I really don't care :)

Hats off, some serious hardware :)

I really don't care. I just thought this is such an awesome build that I had to share with the PC enthusiast community. I have definitely taken ideas and learned from people on this forum. hopefully people can appreciate the build and also learn from it.

I think you meant to repond to someone that gave a negative review.........I expect you to delete your comment very soon as you didn't understand what you read...

Sorry you wasted your time here :( You should not talk to a 12 year old like this...Makes me very sad......

What is your problem toothy? Are you broke and so you have to hate on others? Is that what poverty is teaching you?

You are what they call a "jerk"

You need to grow up and learn how to communicate with others. Get away from computers and actually meet and greet people.

I wish you the best of luck

I might build something similar to this. in Australia we have a minimum wage of $41 an hour so I have money for it but i have to decide if i want to waste it on n overkill system (in good way) xD

  • 3 points

AUSTRALIA HAS A MINIMUM WAGE OF $41 AN HOUR?!

  • 2 points

An average wage of 41$ an hour? That's not entirely true.... There is average and median.... The median is definitely not 41$ an hour. However Our minimum wage is around 16-17$ (USD Which translates to roughly 20$ AUD) an hour! Now that's good.

  • 1 point

  • 1 point

Australia does definitely not have a minimum wage of $41. For me, I'm pretty sure the minimum wage is $14, and for adults I think it is $20. Not too sure, but I'm 100% that it isn't $41.

Holy Crap, Where I work I'm making $16 an hour and I thought that was pretty good. I could be building monster computers on $41 an hour. And have a nice house and car.

  • 1 point

No actually. Everything costs a shitton over here. To get a DEPOSIT on a house, you will be saving for 5 years, with a really decent paying job.

It's because Americans have too many companies that pay **** all, thats why when our companies treat their employees not like dirt, we can live

Dang... This is amazing. I'm quite jealous! XD awesome build +1

  • 3 points

This is one of those builds where the cost just seems irrelevant. I mean, who cares what it costs when it's packed full of beauty like this build?

This is an absolute epic of epicness...

I mean for gaming, I doubt there's an improvement over an i7-4790k + Sli GTX980's... but who cares?

Bravo!

  • 3 points

Ok, on further review... Yes, I know I'm picky, but why are the SSDs so small? Why not 4x1TB? Everything else is so epic... (I wonder what this would look like with Dark Sparkle tubing...) Hell, just as it is, I like your build. +10 for just going for it. :)

  • 2 points

the initial 4x 256GB SSD's in RAID-0 are solely going to be dedicated to the main host OS. no need for more than ~1TB for OS and apps. The plan is to utilize a second RAID-0 array of 6x 1TB SSD's dedicated to data storage and space/fast R/W for VM's.

  • 3 points

Yikes. I hope you have some kind of nightly backup/cloning plan in mind. The speed would be absolutely insane but so would the risk.

I love the build by the way. It's inspiring.

  • 1 point

Well, if you don't already have it, I'd suggest an outsized NAS box be a (near) future project. Or some other regular backup medium / routine. This last Thursday, my OS SSD died after causing the machine to bluescreen in a game session. I had a image backup of the system to work from, so I was able to get up the next morning and be up and running in an hour (frickin' Windows updates took forever though) on one of my other project SSDs. So, yeah, that's my cautionary anecdote for today. :)

I've built an entire pc on the budget of your power supply :I Nice built, If anything I can't resist that led Sli bridge.

  • 2 points

Bravo... if you dont mind me asking, Why do you need so much power? Seems a bit of an overkill am i right.

  • 1 point

Might be a bit. Remember that he has 3 GTX 980s from EVGA, that pulls a bunch of power. Also a rather power hungry CPU, and a bunch of other things that use power. IF he overclocks, he will want to have overhead room.

  • 1 point

many devices to power, OC'ing, probably will still have some headroom after 10+ SSDs, 3x GPUs, pumps, fans, etc. etc.

Goal was to build an all encompassing machine for the following- Work - I am a software developer constantly utilizing 3-5 virtual machines at the same time for test and dev environments on different platforms. Also do UI design and 2D animations for UIs. at any given time while working I can possibly have 3+ VMs open with 8-10 processor and memory intensive apps along side of the test environments. Play - Wanted to be able to play any game on this rig, but mostly racing games. hence the 3x 34" wides.

km, when you begin gaming, your current video cards will not start the fan spin until you reach the temp of 140F/60C. (this is by default) Since you have heat generated parts in quantity you might want to keep an eye on the internal case temps.

I have the same video card and run the fan speed based on the temp curve. But I start at 15% fan speed. I didn't want my internal case temps to be 139.99F and the video card fan speed it not turning. When heavy gaming with just one of your 980's the temps at the most are 130F/54C. So both your processor and video cards don't produce a lot of heat. But I don't know what happens to the temps with many 980's inside one box :)

if you interested in some video card bling, check this out.

Several NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPUs, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX SLI Bridge, feature illuminated LEDs that can now be controlled with the new GeForce Experience “NVIDIA GeForce GTX LED Visualizer” module. Included with all installs of GeForce Experience, the new module allows GeForce GTX users to customize the brightness and animation of the illuminated “GeForce GTX” text, adding patterns and effects that further enhance the personality of your PC. On the SLI bridge, the illumination and animation of the GeForce GTX Claw logo can be similarly controlled.

I think what I like best is that you're building it yourself. There are boutique system builders out there that can handle a build like this, but what makes it awesome for me is that you are designing and building it yourself. Just because I would differ with you on some of the storage choices (ok, I really hate RAID-0) doesn't make it any less a killer project.

I think this build deserves better fans than Corsair. I know it's a tiny tiny thing compared to the scale of three titanic GPUs such as the 980s. I hope all those parts serve you well and you get a lot of joy building and using this computer.

I've got the same gpu btw. Just a 970... a single 970, but I still like it. And I don't envy you a lot. I mean, a bit, like a big bit, the size of a car or so, but... Have fun.

i like the corsair fans look. colored rings in particular, and pretty quiet

I agree with you. I'm just a bit sore over how bad their 140mm fans are. They're actually worse performers than their 120mm ones. Which is just amazing to me. I'm talking 120mm SP Quiet vs 140mm SP Quiet specifically.

P.S. I was going to buy them, too, because I thought they look good. But I got offered something twice as good in every aspect for 30% less price wise.

Some people ask "Why?"... and some people ask "Why not?" because they dare to dream.

  • 1 point

"Because they dare to dream" - about a thing they can use in their office. Not about far off places, or some cause they can champion, or about self-improvement... but about a thing to put on their desk so they can say "I spent more on my RAM than most people do on their entire setup."

  • 1 point

A thing they can use to build and explore virtual worlds beyond our imagination; to donate computer time to SETI or Folding@home or any number of worthy projects; to challenge one's skills to answer the question: "Can I make this work?" This site is a testament to that rush when you light up the power LED on the beast you just built and... it WORKS. That computer is sitting on a desk in his home. He's the only one who will see every day its capabilities, performance and little quirks and foibles. It is his vision of the penultimate computing tool, and I, for one am glad he shared a glimpse. I may not agree with all of it (I'm not a big fan of RAID-0 setups) but I can gain insight into where my ideas might evolve in time. That, and I'm kind of a hardware geek myself. :)

Benchmarking: As high as you can go. GPU Intensive Games: 4.3GHz. CPU Intensive Games: As high as you can go.

You should stay at 4.5GHz everything will be utilized.main concern is just dont want have just the number, if it's at 4.5GHz and need it You keep it at 4.5 if Video cards will not utilize that much you can lower it down a bit.

That isn't very specific. What games specifically in which a single 980 or 3x980's wouldn't be able to handle?$$$$$$"This seems like a thread where someone is just wanting to buy the most expensive everything without any specific merit or requirements. Without knowing what specific games and applications you are wanting to run that might require that much hardware, it isn't really feasible to recommend a solution beyond 2x or3x SLI 980's. Can you provide more details on what all you are planning to run with this machine? It sounds like you are likely trying to spend far more money than you remotely need in order to meet your goals. you should go 1xwith 50 or 55 4K UHDTV your eyes will be damaged when sitting close with 3x 34in "monitor forgiveme if i too many critics.up to you if your guy a lot of money.

Its not why, but why not. If someone wants to build a beast of a computer, let him/her. do not question the madness of someone before understanding your own insanity.

Frankly, if I had the money to build something like this, I would. I like building PCs and, well, it would be nice to do something epic just once. This is like building your own... Bugatti Veyron.

This is going to sound absurd but honestly the computer build doesn't make much sense to me.

You've got 15M pixels there. Even with 3 980's I think you will have a hard time keeping the games at 60fps on high/ultra settings. I'm running 2 970's with just 1 of those monitors and it's a challenge on some games.

If you're really in the realm of "f*** it" with regards to money, which is fine, you should consider returning the 980s and waiting for the new titans to come out to complete the build. Otherwise you're just bottlenecking yourself, which is absurd when the bottlenecks are costing you 2 grand.

Unless you're just planning to game on 1 monitor and keep the other two for other things, which is the only practical solution here, but again, at that point youre kind of just wasting performance.

Yeah, but if you keep waiting for the next "best" tech to come out, you'll never get anything built and usable.

the new titan literally came out today and would make a real difference performance wise given his setup. there's also a big difference between waiting for the new titan, which is already announced and came out today, and which will also be the market leader for the next year as it maxes out the chipset architecture, and worrying about whether a small iteration or improvement like the 980ti is right around the corner, which will be a minimal improvement at best and is unconfirmed.

this sounds like minor stuff but when you're spending 12 grand on a pc it makes a real difference. it's not a chore to wait 1 week and spend ~1k more to have a pc thats really capable of playing games on all 3 monitors 5MP monitors in surround, as opposed to really only being able to use 1.

Then that depends on whether he knew the new Titan was due out today. Given that the 980's and compatible waterblocks are already out and he's installed / ordered the parts, if I were lucky enough to be in his shoes, I might have gone ahead and done the same, it not quite for the same reasons. You'll still end up with a PC that will crush any app or benchmark you decide to throw at it and it's up and running now.

Frankly, if you trying to crush benchmarks in surround at that resolution with this setup, you won't do it. Not possible. Which is frankly crazy when you spend 10 grand on something.

With that in mind, if you're spending 10 grand on something, you should be aware of what's going on in the market. That said, nobody is really faulting the guy if he didn't know... But the part exists as of today and he is likely in the return period for his 980s...

Ok, ok... just remember it's not MY system we're talking about. (And why would I run my benchmarks in surround? I'd wanna have a comparison basis with other single-screen setups.) After this little fiasco with the VRAM on the 970's I think I (or our submitter) couldn't be faulted for going ahead with the current plans for the system instead of waiting to see if the new Titan was going to be as good as Nvidia's pre-release hype. We're talking about another $3k of video cards (on a system that didn't drop an additional $5-7k on an dual-Xeon workstation board and associated hardware (see above conversation w/ submitter)). Seriously, at what point do you stop planning and waiting for hardware and start building?

i plan on whatever the next gen GPUs are, preferably something nvidia- 8GB ram, and handing down the 980s to my son. the GPU tech out there right now cannot keep up with current resolution screens for fast refresh gaming. i have gone through several iterations of monitor setups and from 3x 4Ks, 3x ROG swifts, single 5K, ... and the 3x 1440p ultra wide is the best solution for my work needs right now. and its uber awesome for nvidia surround and racing games.

i hear you on the monitors. absolutely great monitor, if i could have 2 more i would be psyched as well.

titan is out today, 12gb ram, much better. honestly surround gaming as is (980s) with those monitors at a native resolution sounds terrible with 4gb ram. it would be like putting on a VR headset from the 1980s. okay, not that bad, but the point is that its an easy improvement to make and if you're waiting on water cooling components right now you might as well exchange the cards.

these 980s and monitors work well for my current needs - work and iRacing. i just played iRacing for an hour in nvidia surround with a capped frame rate of 120FPS. 120FPS buffer never dropped. the 4GB buffer can prolly handle close to 200FPS in iRacing for this resolution. and GPU cores didnt pass 72C. when Project Cars comes out,... 980s might have to get replaced. we'll see,...

"just bottlenecking yourself"

This is Soooooooooo BS!!!

it really isn't BS. bottlenecks can occur no matter how much you spend. the only difference in a situation like this is that you've wasted more money.

A bottleneck refers to when you have a part that can't be used to its full capacity because another part is not good enough.

In this case, there are 3 monitors, each running at almost 4k. One 980 running at 100% efficiency can't run one of these monitors at 60FPS on ultra settings for new games. Taking into account the fact that additional graphics cards don't scale perfectly (so 3 cards running together in SLI don't perform as well as 3 cards individually), and that you would be limited to 4GB total of VRAM in SLI (despite this setup begging for more VRAM), this is a clear case of bottleneck.

It's not about the money. It's about finding parts that work together well to maximize performance.
