I use this machine for general computing, BOINC, CAD, Astrophotography editing (soon) and lite gaming (no AAA anything except on my console). Using the inherited parts from my last computer worked well. Much of the build is not new, the case, PSU, GPU, Optical drive (approximate match), case fans, monitor, is inherited from my last build (which evolved) over 10 years.
I like the premium motherboard even though I could have gotten away with other less expensive options. I really like the number of USB ports on the back without the need for a hub, the integrated WiFi, the quality of the hardware, just overall happy. M.2 is amazing, volume of RAM is amazing compared to what I had before (and I seem to need that much). The GPU meets my needs even though it is much weaker than other gaming options.
The stock cooler for the Ryzen 5 was not so great, it let the cpu get semi-uncomfortably hot under full load without overclock. With the Noctua, I sustain cool temperatures about 15C lower than the stock, and it is Overclocked to 4 Ghz, without much time investment other than what the computer figured out it could overclock to. Highest temp I have seen so far is 63C under BOINC, usually it is at 59 or 60 and that is it. I do not have the "silencer" attachment to the fan, it hits nearly 1500 rpm and is quiet enough pleasing sounding for my ears.
I would have picked faster RAM, but it still works really well. My RAM has been successfully OC'ed by others with luck from 2666 to I believe 2933.
And yes, that is a PCI-e serial port. I need a serial port. Each does a whopping 230Kbps. Not sure if I have the "special" one that is capable of 1Mbps.
