Description

This was my first build; as my friend put it, I've joined the elite of the PC Master Race. Mostly I wanted a blazing fast computer that wasn't super big. And it zips. Some things are overkill if you're not a gamer, but I plan to dabble in VR and now that I upgraded my TV, I needed something to utilize everything 4k. I also plan on getting a another SSD when a 1TB comes down a bit in price. Put the rear fan on on the motherboard, and the other 3 to the case fan controller...It's SUPER QUIET! My CPU Cooler, H7, this thing is enormous on a Mini-ITX board but i like it, looks cool. The corsair 380T is awesome, very easy for a first timer to build on, love that Yellow, went with green fans cause it's a CHEESEHEAD NATION!! Go Pack Go!...update: After I installed my GPU, very long story short it took out my MOBO and CPU. Both Intel and MSI were great about there warranty but still went with a different board. Everything was compatible, not sure what happened, but changed PSU from 500w to 750w, just to be safe. Everything reinstalled fine and now it's as if it never happened. Maybe just unlucky.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

works great, it is HUGE on a mini itx board, but does the trick, install was a little tricky, helped to take off fan, look at box to figure out how to put back together.

Storage

Perfect for an OS install. Works great, Super easy to install.

Case

Awesome Case, works great, with my CPU cooler doesn't utilize LED light very well, but is a great case even for a first time builder like me. Important to know, this case does support some liquid cooler despite what error message you get from PC Picker. the radiator just mounts where the two side by side 120mm case fans would go.

Case Fan

very quiet, love that green LED

Case Fan

very quiet, love that green LED

Also what VR unit/headset are you looking at getting?

I kept saying that and my Bros get telling me I'd be fine with 500, I knew I should have went with 650, it was the same dang price as the 500 without rebates, DAMN IT! Im still on the fence, I've been watching a friend take it 9 ways from Sunday from Oculus over these shipping delays, he was supposed to get his like over a month ago. So... sort of developing a bad taste for them... the Vive is looking better and better..

  • 1 point

RULE OF THUMB: If the unit is better for the same price, always take the deal.

Live and learn

Yeah I agree, the vive is starting to look like the only thing out there really doing anything cool. And the content getting released for it is growing by the day.

It's not clear, but I'm pretty sure your cpu cooler fan is on the wrong side and facing the wrong direction. The neat thing about Cryorig fans is has the arrows pointing the direction the fan blades spin. The arrow should be pointing down, not up. This would mean the fan is trying to intake air from the rear of the case. The current placement is causing it to fight for air along with the rear exhaust. Would recommend moving fan towards the front and flipping around.

  • 1 point

Thank you, had to flip it causes of the zero ram whatever feature on the cooler has to go to that side so it doesn't interfere with the ram. GOOD CALL! THANK YOU THANK YOU! As soon as I read it, it immediately made sense, I kept saying it has to go on the other side but I was vetoed by my mentor, turns out we both were right. So for that, I say you're a gentleman and a scholar.

The 1080 will be their new flagship card.... then theTitan (pascal) will be when it comes out. And of course people will say go with the 1070/1080 because they are the 2 most powerful cards known. Yes, AMD vega is soon, buthe the stats and everything have not been released yet, meaning some won't even think about that.

[comment deleted]
  • 2 points

True, but he is also running 4k. And the r9 Fury may be a good budget 4k card, but if the 1070 holds to its fame when benchmarks comes out, it may be a better "budget" 4K card. I think everyone is waiting for Polaris stats to start saying "GO FOR AMD". It's all a waiting game with tech

  • 2 points

Just remember that AMD said that polaris wont be going for huge performance, and they will be an amazing middle man with great price to performance, but Vega is the real flagship.

  • 2 points

A bit of an overreaction to me, to be honest. He just said he'll be getting a gtx 1070, while I do agree he should wait to see what AMD has to offer (I'm looking foward to polaris aswell). To be honest the full polaris chip should be around the same performances of a 1070, but if he wants a good 4k experience I think he should head for the 1080, atm there shouldn't be an AMD card that powerful.

  • 1 point

Since AMD claims that r9 480 will have the perfomance of a 390x itd be wise to wait till polaris out and see will they really offer what they claimed

  • 2 points

Yes, as I said I'm waiting aswell. Hope to see very good performance for its price. I don't think they have confirmed the name though.

  • 1 point

Oh yeah, I'm totally waiting, it's a good time to wait too and as I'm not really ready to adopt a doctrine to any company or brand, since Im very new to this, I'm very content in waiting...I will say I do lean towards NVIDIA only cause of a few bad experiencea with AMD, but AMD is kinda of the underdog and who doesn't love rooting for the underdog! We shall see...

Yea, totally, I'm such a noob, that this is actually teaching me a lot about it, and even more hilarious is I have friends on either side of this argument.. which is making forming my opinion that much more fun.. at least people are polite here, my friends are not polite! You're right though, Im just not in a hurry to commit to one and the 1080 is beyond my needs so I liked your comment. Cause stupid people will breed stupid advice...

[comment deleted]
  • 2 points

No. People are saying "you should've waited for pascal" because it's dumb to buy a 970 when the nexxt gen 1070 will be not too much more money. Nobody is saying you can't buy what you want. I thought part of the point of the site was to critique part selection. Also, a 970 won't compare at all in VR performance to cards that have been proven to have VR performance similar or better than a titan. That is like the only information we have on pascal atm.

[comment deleted]
  • 1 point

Since the 1070 beats the last gen Titan X, people shouldn't mind paying $100 more for it than the 970.

[comment deleted]
  • 1 point

Yes, I know. You shouldn't be this critical about a product before it even launches.

  • 2 points

Yea I agree, I don't think Pascal is going to deliver what they say they will, they always say stuff like this(AMD included) and the people that fall into the trap are the ones that are just getting into the PC world, not the ones who have been here for at least a couple of years.

The reason why the 900 series was so great was because of the DX11 performance but with DX12 and soon vulkin, there will be a huge change in performance that we are currently seeing now with certain games. For example, cards like the 280 were out performing the 980 in dx12 games, a 150 graphics card(Current price on websites to get it for cheap) was out performing a 400+ dollar card, that's insane.

Didn't Nvidia Gimp the 7 series cards with drivers? or are they still great?

  • 2 points

They haven't gimped anything. However, none of the driver updates have drastically increased performance like the Radeon drivers have for older cards.

  • 1 point

Oh cool, i thought they destroyed the 7 series with driver issues, and i know radeon has much better customer support as well :P

  • 1 point

Exactly!these are my thought as well. Im so sick of this nonsense people say "gtx 1080 is DA BEAST! nothing can beat it not even polaris abd amd has already lost the competition" smh most of the people dont even know polaris is the mainstream line up ,vega 10 and 11 which are due in 2017 are the high end and enthusiast series. More than that what i cant bear is that people keep believing that the 1080 is a beast just because of its insane specs and nvidia claims so wtf real benchmarks are not even out yet but still people believe Nvidias own benchmarks

  • 1 point

I don't understand this...Are you saying that the 1080 and 1070 do outperform the current Titan X? Just wondering?

However, if you said what I think you said, I would agree with you in stating that there will be a Titan Pascal iteration. They did the 1080, they will most likely do a 1080 Ti and then a new Titan, that may or may not be called titan at all.

Still though...if it is true that the 1080 / 70 are faster than the Titan x, that puts them to a "flagship" status. Generally speaking, in the english language (and very much all other languages too) a "flagship" is a model of a make that is leading the rest of the line, ergo...faster, better, generally more expensive but not always, but overall more powerful and better performing.

So, I guess I'm just trying to figure out what it is that you are trying to say with "1080/70 not being the new flagships of nVidia"...cause they sure seam to me like they are.

But that's just me.

  • 2 points

The 1070 and 1080 were demonstrated in vr to have similar or better performance than a titan. That's literally the only benchmark on Pascal we have at all

  • 1 point

soo...if Pascal performs better than the Titan X in VR, which is more demanding than any other application, it will perform better in non-VR, making it the flagship......I feel like this is no brainer to me...I dunno...maybe I'm wrong.

  • 1 point

It's optimized better for VR according to Nvidia, but they have been pretty mum on actual benchmarks and frames in normal gaming. It should be significantly better than 980ti, but not quite as good as titan. Still way better value for the price

  • 1 point

Dude......the 980 Ti is better than the Titan...what are you talking about. Pascal is a new architecture...course is going to be more powerful. The only advantage the Titan X has against the 980 Ti and the 1080 is the 12GB VRAM...that's pretty much it.

Go look some benchmarks.

  • 2 points

NVidia says that in VR applications and other areas the 1080 easily outperforms the Titan X especially at cost/performance ratio. This may be shown when benchmarks are released. Until that and AMD competition is actually released we really don't know much in real world benchmarks or what the best buy may be. Right now it is completely up to what you want to do and the efficiency you want as the current Nvidia GPU's are dropping in price or available used and still perform great at 1080p or 1440p.

The VR improvements may push people to the new cards, but a VR setup is $500+ anyways so dropping that much on a new GPU that can handle the system may be within budget as well.

Pls don't hate me for saying this I'm not a fanboy, I just wanted to point out that it would be kinda silly to wait for something that's not nearly out yet; doesn't guarantee better bang for buck, AND RUN OFF OF THE iGPU FOR A YEAR.
