Description

I built this a few months ago and it's been getting popular on r/battlestations so I decided to add the parts list here. Thanks everyone for your encouragement and interest.

I just want to mention that I owned the TV, Monitors, Keyboard, and Mouse, before I spent money on this build.

Meithen 2 Builds 7 points 13 months ago

You don't have to be an engineer to afford this kind of stuff. You don't even have to be making that much, just don't blow your earnings on things you don't need. That's what people have trouble with.

islandg@m3r 1 Build 5 points 13 months ago

I Concur, anyone can get this setup and I'm sure he didn't drop 6K one time for this build unless he balling like no tomorrow, like my build for instance at the time costed me roughly 1500, but I bought parts over a 3-4 month period a piece or 2 at a time to let my paychecks build up =)

BeerzGod 2 Builds 3 points 13 months ago

Agreed. You can also buy used parts which significantly cut down on cost. With everyone throwing out transferable warranties now, it's fairly safe to buy used computer tech these days.

wiigamer136 3 points 13 months ago

Very true

Radox-0 3 Builds 5 points 13 months ago

Cat looks like its chilling, and great PC also :) very nice work.

How are your temps?

+1

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 3 points 13 months ago

Thanks! Temps sit around 43 degrees Celsius under load. I only have a mild overclock on the gpu and cpu. I had originally been waiting to see other's overclocking results to replicate but any game I play doesn't go under 100fps on my full span, 5760x1080 resolution.

Tooth 1 Build 4 points 13 months ago

you have 3 - $129 monitors........why didnt you go all 4K? If you like the visuals, stick a 4K as your middle monitor or go 3 wide all at 4K. two - GTX 1080's would do the trick which you have. As you already know, not all games can play 3 wide.

Very under preforming gaming for $6,500

If you had 3 - 4K monitors, then you get the "beast" title for life :)

You need a 1440p 165hz monitor for this beast :)

The plan is to get 3 of those come black friday.

I see your comment above. Are you scared of 4K gaming???

Love your build, by the way!!

APEBuilt 3 Builds 5 points 13 months ago

A high framerate monitor has its advantages and there are zero current high refresh rate monitors with a UHD or "4K" resolution. Also, OP mentions OP had the monitors before the build. Another thing to consider is 3x1 4K monitors in the games that do support it would not run very well (This is considering a recent video with SLI GTX Titan X pascal GPUs paired with a 6950X CPU that struggled with a 4th monitor (Nvidia surround setup 2x2) See LTT youtube channel and others for more. Another consideration is most 4K monitors are bigger than average monitors so size on the desk might be something that kept that form happening.

Great build OP. Share/update your glorious battlestation pics when you have your triple G-sync monitor setup pretty please.

Tooth 1 Build 4 points 13 months ago

I was looking for his reply of staying with 1080 resolution

BeerzGod 2 Builds 4 points 13 months ago

4k is nice, but it's very highly overrated for gaming. It's just performance shattering eye candy for multiplayer games, but I'll give you single-player 4k. I would rather game on 1440p with a much higher frame rate and refresh rate all day.

Tooth 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

have you played on a 4K monitor in the past?

BeerzGod 2 Builds 4 points 13 months ago

I owned one for a while because I thought it would be a huge leap up from 1440p. Needless to say I didn't have the monitor long. While 4k does look very good, I lean on the side of performance. I don't play multiplayer games to admire the scenery or gasp in awe at the grass physics. That's for single-player.

So while 4k is the next logical step after 1440p, it's staying on the backburner until 144hz 4k is working fluidly and there are graphics cards available to push the fps that high.

Cr1ms0n -4 points 13 months ago

ok look there are some people whom cant play cs:go if there min frame-rate is under 150, and that is overkill considering that the human eye can only see up to 60 frames per second. Now, I can understand wanting to play games at around 100 so that if the frame-rate never drops below 60, but any more than that and you're paying for braging rights. Coming form a notebook with an I7-26something and an AMD 68something, I can understand wanting to play at a higher frame rate. but, some people buy 4k monitors because they want to get double the resolution out of the monitor then they previously had, of which I completely understand. For people like me, we dont just go for the newest hot thing every year, we just upgrade every 5, and dont want to have to worry about being behind the trend w/ a 1440 monitor in 4 years. That's like trying to game on a 720p monitor today, and to tell someone like this they should get a monitor they will end up hating for overpaying for when the could have just as easily bought a 4k monitor.

BeerzGod 2 Builds 4 points 12 months ago

Actually, the human eye can process up to 1,000 frames per second. Humans are only capable of discerning the difference in fps up to 150. Like the ability to tell 15fps from 40fps. 40fps to 60fps. 60fps to 100fps and so on.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you've never actually gamed on a 120-144hz monitor before. Your argument suggests you're fairly stuck in a box of misinformation and a lack of actual experience.

Camaxide 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

well this a lie.. where did you learn that the human eye can only see up to 60 frames per second...?

4K for multiplayer gaming is not excellent as of today, but with the new HDMI standard coming, we will get 120hz 4K - and then it will be all mint (as long as the machine can run it at 120fps) until then, not so much.

jsoutherland89 4 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

This is wonderful! Excellent job documenting each step with photos.

crookz_n_castlez 4 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Very nice build Man! I chose the same color for my coolant.

I got a question for you especially since it's you're first water cooled build; how hard was it bending the tubes?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

It was more frustrating to bend the tubes. I have a box of failed bends. It took a while to develop a feel and patience for it.

crookz_n_castlez 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

That's a very good tip! Thanks! I'm guessing you did everything by hand instead of using those tools that you place the tubing on?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

I did use a 90 degree mandrel to start out with, but as I got used to it, I just did it by feel.

crookz_n_castlez 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Okay cool. Thanks for being helpful!

Mpd_ 2 points 13 months ago

You need a 1440p 165hz monitor for this beast :)

Sharet-OP 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks so much bro

Thefan630 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

I wonder: Do this people that do crazy expensive Pcs have a wife or something? They generally make a setup that takes a good amount of real estate that a normal woman would generally question.

Oh, and they always own cats.

On a more serious note: Is it only for gaming or do you intend to use it for professional/prosumer applications?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 5 points 13 months ago

It is really for gaming and just a dream to accomplish that I've had since I was a kid looking at crazy computer builds. The wife supplied the TV and helped mount it to the wall. She has her own desk and setup behind mine and just has to turn around to watch netflix or twitch on it.

DeltaForceGM01 1 point 13 months ago

nice job with the water cooling why for get a 6800k save $200 and overclock it insted?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 7 points 13 months ago

I have an unhealthy attachment to PCI express lanes.... I know it's pointless to go X16 on both sli slots but now I can say I have dedicated lanes for both cards and the m.2

Vreaker12 3 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

I'm still confused on this - wouldn't the second SLI slot share bandwidth with the m.2?

Sick build by the way. It just looks soooo wicked and cool. +1

BossRSA 4 points 13 months ago

No, because the i7-6850K has 40 PCI-E lanes, so GPU + GPU + M.2 = 16 + 16 + 4 = 36 PCI-E lanes used. So OP could actually add another M.2 without bottlenecking anything.

BossRSA 5 points 13 months ago

The 6850K has more PCI-E lanes than the 6800K, which means running both cards in x16, compared to the 6800K which would run the cards at x8, therefore not using their full potential (the 6800K has 28 PCI-E lanes, whereas the 6850K has 40 PCI-E lanes).

Xpert_Kid_One 3 points 13 months ago

But running the cards at x8 doesnt have more than 3 fps effect on any of the test ive seen.

BossRSA 5 points 13 months ago

Where those tests using benchmarks or real-world performance? Also, with a budget like this, you don't want any bottlenecks in your system.

Camaxide 1 Build 0 points 11 months ago

True, but it is also true that most games prefer few fast cores over many slower ones - and thus the question really is if 4.5-5.0 ghz with x8 is slower than 3.5-4.0 ghz with 16x.. (Some new games enjoys many cores, but the majority isnt there yet). All tests I've seen comparing x16 with x8 uses a 40 lane board and disables lanes to do the 8x test - which then still leave them stuck with the same cpu at lower clocks - generally removing the benefit of higher clocks in less cores. http://www.pcgamer.com/intel-core-i7-6850k-review/ shows that the 6850 runs games 3-4 fps slower than a 6700k due to lower clocks (this will vary per game) so likely the win from x16 goes up in smoke there.

BossRSA 2 points 11 months ago

True, however at the same time, many new games are starting to be able to utilize more cores (BF1, as an example), and you have rather minimal returns once you start overclocking past ~4GHz.

BossRSA 1 point 13 months ago

Lovely build, great job!

JN4657 1 point 13 months ago

This is probably the neatest, nicest overall best pc i have every seen. +1 for the pc and (if I could) another +1 for the cat :)

tom.spiers 1 point 13 months ago

With the watercooling do you think that it is worth the investment over air cooling?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

In terms of the performance, overclocking ability without making my room a sauna, and absolute silence, I'd say it was well worth it over my old air cooled PC.

tom.spiers 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks for the speedy reply. Just thinking about a pc when I have money

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

story of every pc gamer lol

Philldog123 1 point 13 months ago

I wish I had this much money. Looks amazing! Love the look and great cable management! Awesome build! +1 from me!

infamousk12 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

This is one of the most beautiful builds I've ever seen. Congrats.

Cazza_ 1 point 13 months ago

So you didn't own the cat before you built this pc? :D so sexy :)

PCBUILD001 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

super Clean !

LemurWithAFemur 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

This is actually the sexiest rig and setup i have ever seen in my life. GREAT build! +1

Wolklung 1 point 13 months ago

Woah. Nice.

I actually like the way you've done the tube from the base of the rez to the front rad. Always tempting to keep everything to 45s and 90s where possible... but that flows well looks great!

JunkaDK 1 point 13 months ago

Really nice build :) But i don't get the 60hz monitors :)

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

They are 5 year old holdovers until I see some good deals come back friday and my wallet recovers a bit.

xen0bear 3 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Awesome. And thanks for documenting it all with so many great pics!

NeonThought 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Great build. Minor question, what's the boot time on this?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

From completely off to functional with quick boot disabled to the lock screen on windows 10, around 6 seconds.

NeonThought 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Noice.

Yahtadi 1 point 13 months ago

Why dont this build on Featured Build? With all those parts, i am surprised it didnt cost 8k :)

The best!

Yahtadi 1 point 13 months ago

Hey i said it now it comes true. Conrats to be on Featured man!

Areksoo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

So many similarities with my build. I got a wall mounted TV with triple monitors on a stand. I used the same case (in black) and even have the same laptop.... and orange cat, well I got 2 of those! lol.

The main difference is my PC is a gaming beast... your PC is a gaming destroyer.

Looks like you peeled of the SSD label. You should front mount it.

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I wanted to do a custom backlit label or something for the front mount area, but I might just get another SSD for there.

SilverWolf149 1 point 13 months ago

Good build mate! +1!

SeperatedSoul 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Whoa is all im giong to say. beautiful build. love the attention to detail. +1

ermau 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Awesome looking build, congrats on the featured!

BossRSA 1 point 13 months ago

Featured! Great job, you definitely deserved it!

SalFlu 1 point 13 months ago

What kind of cat is that? And why didn't you put the resevoir on to the radiator? Nice build tho!

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Dusty is a straight-eared scottish fold. If you mean mount the reservoir with the bracket to the radiator's 120mm holes. I wanted to do that, but the hole/passthrough built into the case wasn't long enough and would require cutting.

SalFlu 1 point 13 months ago

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sucks that you can't do that! Still a nice build tho.

JuguLugu 1 point 13 months ago

Nice build, thx for sharing!

Jaime.g 1 point 13 months ago

One word... EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dolomats 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Is the case fan header better than motherboard fan header ?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I wouldnt say either is better. Just a matter of convenience in running cables to a central location and knowing that I can control each bank of fans easily.

Dolomats 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

ok i see, just curious to know how you can control your fan ? is there a phantecks software or something ?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

The motherboard allows me to control the voltage of each fan header, so it's a large bank for the radiator fans and separate headers for the exhaust fan and pump.

Dolomats 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

ok thank you

JovialJackass97 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Dude you were honestly scaring me around slide 48. I was like, "What the hell? hes not really going to put olive oil, right?" totally not remembering that your pictures in the beginning showed blue liquid. hehehe

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

I read the olive oil was great for getting the bending cord in and out of the hard tubing so it was there, but the bending cord went in and out pretty easily.

Vojta_ 1 point 13 months ago

I definitly love this pc, only thing i dont like about this pc is tube which is covering the reservoir. But its still one of the most beautiful pc's i've ever seen here.

+1

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I totally see the lack of aesthetics there but the angle was strange and it was a pain enough to secure a proper place for the radiator in the first place so it was a meh decision. Thanks for liking it!

Vojta_ 1 point 13 months ago

I'm sure you did best you could do. Enjoy your new pc.

nckb 1 point 13 months ago

you weren't tempted to just fill the res from the top?

PlatinumEra 1 point 13 months ago

Nice. How exactly did you mount the rad to the the top? I've been mouthing my fans in the top cavity and the rad to the bottom included bracket

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Its basically a clamp with the two aluminium bars. The screws are just squeezing the bar and radiator together onto the top of the case structure. I didn't have to drill any holes on top of the case.

NepenthesLucas 1 point 13 months ago

I wish i had the money for this kind of stuff! AMAZING!

bman49 1 point 13 months ago

Dude with all your nice PC specs... Why did you get such low grade monitors?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

The monitors ran my old dual gtx660 setup. I figured they can last a few more months till I hopefully see some good black friday or cyber monday deals on 1440p g sync monitors.

mb67 5 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

This is just fantastic looking!

I'm looking at upgrading my Madame Rouge build to something similar after the New Year, and was wondering if you had any issues building in the Phanteks Glass case?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

I had no issues with building inside the case due to the glass. There were little tweaks that I did have to make to the case to get things to fit nicely. 1. remove the sliding top fan mount and bend its holder back (or else the top rad inlet and outlet ports would hit it) 2. Used a dremel to make 2 notches for screws on the front radiator mounting holes (the default position makes the radiator just a hair too tall where the outlet and inlet ports will hit the top radiator. ) 3. Drilled out holes on the bottom of the case to mount the radiator/pump holder.

That was all I did to modify the case.

mb67 5 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks for the reply! I'm really leaning towards that case for my next build.

WirelessCables 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Imagine the stress the Staff members are going through now with so many good builds coming so quickly.

But on a related note, +1! I'm liking your aesthetic choice. One suggestion to amp this build up even further would be to go on Amazon and find a black or Carbon-Fiber wrap to put on the side of your power supply. Nice job on the custom loop, though!

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I like that idea, the red was bothering me, but sadly the motherboard also has red LEDs that can't be turned off so in a way it matches. But for a cleaner look, I might make that PSU window into something else.

For the first build, I wanted to keep everything as simple as I could.

WirelessCables 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

the motherboard also has red LEDs that can't be turned off so in a way it matches.

Creativity.. Ha ha!

Maybe wrap the entire PSU shroud, and not just the PSU with the wrap. But it's up to you.

For the motherboard LEDs, might some kind of blue film work? I imagine the LEDs shouldn't get too hot as they're not meant to provide illumination, right?

pockchicken submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

The leds themselves are bright and red, had they been white through a red substrate then a film would definitely work. I'd have to desolder the leds from the MB and solder on new ones which is something I'm capable of but maybe at the next level, when I decide to upgrade this or build another, I'll go truly all out and custom.

WirelessCables 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Oh. Ok.

Anything you can potentially disconnect to 'get rid of' the LEDs?

computergeek930 1 point 13 months ago

Congratz on the featured!!

Jaren11Wible 1 point 13 months ago

Have you ever owned a Corsair M65 Pro? If so could you compare the quality to the Mad Catz R.A.T. ?

ShirazEpic 1 point 13 months ago

Too expensive for my liking, even after taking out all the peripherals it's not really something I'd want.

hkbrothe 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

What a stunner of a build... o.O Congrats on featured build!

JacobGunther12 1 point 13 months ago

Wow 59 pictures! You must of REALLY taken your time on those photos. Nice dual GTX 1080s, I wish I had the money to buy those, why did you buy the Asus ones when you could have gotten the Zotac AMP! Extreme ones for only $20 more? They are a lot faster and are amazing. Breathtaking PC, by the way!

Hey just curious where you got the desk from (model)? Been trying to find something bigger that looks decent, and yours looks great.

darkclow 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Just wow amazing

ddehorta 1 point 13 months ago

I dont have words for this beautiful creation. Just wow!

westonb27 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but what mount are you using for the H236HL's? I have 2 and the stands take up way too much room on my desk. Hoping to find a decent mounting solution that wont equate to the price of a third monitor.

Hussein.H 1 point 13 months ago

This is beautiful!! I wish I had money... o.o

zelgiusthebrave 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I've got a question about how you top mounted that rad. I ordered one of EK's kits with a 240 rad and the only thing that puts me off on this case is that sliding fan/rad bracket on top. It looks like you removed it and used 2 strips of aluminum to screw the rad into?

marcelmunarolo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I am really impressed with your work! Congratulations!

Sweet build!! But i think the cat needs an upgrade next!!!

whirichardson 1 point 12 months ago

Upgrading a cat gets you a...dog.

Camaxide 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

that's a serious downgrade which requires way more service work every single day - taking away valuable game-time from the PC...

whirichardson 1 point 12 months ago

Okay I checked this out because I am doing my build with this case.... now I will go back and chuck the air cool option for liquid cooled. Great pics/build. So looks like 30 hrs of youtube and webpage reviews to figure out how to and design it. The more you look the better it get$.

How well does your 6850K over-clock, and what temperatures do you typically see? Also, do you ever have any issues with power delivery or is the 860w PSU enough for an over-clocked x99 platform with SLI 1080's?

Kudos friend! I'm looking to do something similar... i.e. first hardline cooling and similar color scheme. You've got awesome result quality and that blue is beautiful. Nice work!

so did you just change out the 100 res with the 250? I'm talking about just the holder

How many GHz did the cat achieved? Also should've watercooled him

+1 Build extremely beatiful, looks like some sort of blue nuclear reactor. Also with two 360mm radiators don't you think chipset and VRM watercooling could be an option?

Did you have to update the bios on the mobo for the intel i7-6850k?

Hey mate!

How'd you get the CPU radiator so high up in the case? Do you need Low Profile ram to fit in the case with a radiator?

So are the Acer monitors still working for you? I'm looking for a new monitor for an inexpensive build.
