Description

Got tired of my 6-year old laptop and was looking for a new machine. Didn't need the laptop anymore since I had graduated college. Went pretty standard on everything. I spent a little bit more on a good motherboard, as well as a decent PSU too. I picked up a factory refurb 280x off of eBay. I wanted something that could do 1080p 60fps on current and near-future titles, but not have to spend a fortune.

I have great airflow with this case and the fan situation. Two on the front face, two up top, and one on the back panel, as well as the GPU, CPU, and PSU fans. Idle temps are usually between 25-30C. I haven't pushed it much, but BF4 runs on ultra very well actually.

The keyboard and mouse are great considering how relatively cheap they were. The keys aren't mechanical, but they just feel good.

Overall I am very happy with this build.

EDIT: GTA V on high/very high settings, 1080p, runs around 40-60fps constant with the framerate limiter on. With it off, it sits around 60-80fps, but doesn't seem as smooth.

Update 5/18: Swapped the 280x with a GTX 970. Able to run most every game high/ultra at 60fps, 60C.

Part Reviews

CPU

Solid. Haven't overclocked and don't really see the need to in the near future. But it's nice to have the option.

CPU Cooler

Good and cheap for a CPU cooler. Seems to work well and keep temps lower, however I may need to adjust my fan curves better.

Motherboard

Has pretty much everything I need on it. Didn't want to go with a cheap-o mobo, and wanted a full size one as well. No issues so far.

Storage

I think I got this on sale, that's why I went with this one. No issues at all so far, finally found a tray for it for my case. Fast boot times, and basically cuts loads times in BF4 in half compared to a 7200RPM drive.

Storage

It's a hard drive. It stores stuff. Good brand. Already half full.

Case

Just a good standard metal case. It has 5.25" bay drives, comes with a fan on front and fan on back. Everything fits well. Cable management isn't the easiest with this case but definitely achievable. Love the 2 front USB 3.0 ports and the general openness of the case, allows for great airflow.

Power Supply

As everybody does, went a bit overboard on the wattage. I wanted at least a gold rated PSU, and around this price, semi-modular it was, which is perfectly fine. Doesn't get hot, stays quiet, provides consistent power.

Optical Drive

Just the standard cheap CD/DVD reader/writer. There when I need it.

Wireless Network Adapter

In my current situation, ethernet is unavailable, and I don't even want to attempt ethernet over powerline since the house is a bit on the older side (1930's). However, we have a router capable of high throughput on the 5 GHz side. Went with this option over the more expensive as I wouldn't even be able to take advantage of the more expensive one. Haven't experienced any drops or anything of that nature thus far, and being able to attach the antennas via magnet to the case is nice.

Case Fan

See above review.

Monitor

Already have one of these, so I figured just get another to match. I love the glossy screen and how much the color pops. Good refresh rate. Love this monitor, especially considering the price.

Keyboard

Was using a wireless mouse and keyboard during setup and they kept cutting out and were laggy. Found a cheap backlit wired keyboard mouse combo. Keys actually feel very nice on the keyboard. Not mechanical, but just feel nice.

I got that same mouse/keyboard! Smart shopping, decent case, cable management could use some work, but other than that this is pretty solid! Nice battle station btw.

Yeah cable management isn't the greatest. Haven't spent a bunch of time messing around with it, and honestly where it's at is good enough for me now. Maybe someday when I'm bored I'll tinker with it.

So does that card do great for 1080p?

The 970? Hell yeah!

How do you like the Corsair fans?
