Description

This was my first PC build, based on Austin Evan's Boson 3.0 $350 build. I changed the case, power supply, RAM (I went with 16GB instead of 8GB), and storage from his build. Additionally I purchased a PCI WiFi card, and a USB header adapter so I could use the second USB port on the front of the case.

Performance isn't mind blowing, but it is a significant improvement from trying to play games on Intel HD graphics. Modern titles are a hit or miss, I can play Fallout 4 at about 40FPS and 60FPS on Overwatch at 1080p and mixed settings (with Vsync off on both).

My biggest complaint with this build is the case. I lost count of how many zip ties I used, and my SSD is taped to the bottom because there is only one HDD/SDD mount.

Nice build and great improvising. But have you also tried looking for extra HDD/SSD cages online? The GPU was a great choice , but it also would've been a good idea to spend about $10 more and buy an RX 460. You'll get better performance with the 860K! Overall great starter build, have fun with your rig!

I built this before the 480/470/460 were announced, but had they been available, I would have gone for either the 460 and 480. I might upgrade my GPU at some point, but I'm worried that I would have to upgrade the PSU as well.

You wont have to! The RX 480 and 460 are ultra low power :D Also, the RX 460 doesn't need a power cable ^

Cool, I'll have to do some research and see if my CPU is a bottleneck or not for the games I play.

there are more than 1 mount for drives. I have installed 1 ssd and 1 hdd (3.5") and it works! I'll post the build later this week.

Hey there, we're thinking along the same lines. I'm waiting on the last of my parts for a very similar build, just with an r9 380 2gb (because I happen to have one), Im still new to PC's but is it worth getting another stick of ram? I've only got one 8gb. Anything else you might have done differently? I play rust. And other various games, but rust.

8GB seems to be the minimum for most modern games, I got 16GB mostly for when I do development work. Had I done the build again, I would have chosen a case with better cable management and maybe a motherboard with Wi-Fi built in.
