Description

This is what is known around here as a budget build - just about $700 without the monitor. It is used for surfing the internet and sometimes an Excel spreadsheet, email, boring stuff. Oh, and some games too. Charlie replaced a ten year old PC that is still kicking, but can't handle much of anything these days.

My first Mobo was a Gigabyte that I bought refurbished, but turned out to be a lemon and a waste of $60. The MSI was more than I wanted to spend, but has worked flawlessly. And it looks good too - bonus!

I finished this build in January, after finally getting the Mobo, and just in time because I got a new game for Christmas. So happy that I can play a modern game, and it looks good even if its not perfect. The SSD also makes boot times, well, almost non-existent. You will notice there is only a 256Gb SSD, I do plan to get a hard drive for storage eventually.

Overall I am very happy with this build.

Part Reviews

CPU

This is a great budget processor. I have been playing The Witcher 3, which recommends at least an i5, on high settings. The frame rates do drop during some cutscenes, but overall the performance is fine.

CPU Cooler

I'm not overclocking, but wanted to replace the stock cooler which was noisy. Temps are 10 to 15 degrees colder with this one, and it is practically silent.

Storage

No problems with this SSD, and very pleased with the speed.

Video Card

I think this 960 was the best deal. Brand new for under $200, this was the best GPU I could find to fit my budget. So far it has been great.

Case

I agonized for a while over the case, but finally decided on the NZXT over Fractal Design. I got the Razer edition because I like the green lights and matte black. It was really easy to build in, and the tinted window in the Razer edition looks great. The only issue I had was in order to get the GPU in the slot I had to take off an extra piece at the back which was then difficult to put back on. Not a big deal, but annoying.

Power Supply

This semi modular power supply provides ample power for this build, and was on sale.
