Description

I'm 18, a girl, and this is my first pc build! Coming from an xbox 360 to pc! I've wanted a gaming pc for about two years now! I wanted one for my graduation present from high school but my dad wouldn't allow it...I even said I'd split the price with him with my graduation money, but he refused! I've already been through my first year of college now, and my dad got me a summer job at his workplace, and guess what i did with my first two paychecks! (I'm an accountant's intern...it's a lame summer job to help with $$ for college lol) anyway...I BUILT MY FIRST GAMING COMPUTER EVER! So I started out not wanting to spend over $700 but that dream died quickly as I figured out that I wanted to future proof my rig, and have a beefy enough gpu to mod skyrim. So this is my baby, hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do!

cpu: 8 cores for "future proofing" don't plan on overclocking

cpu cooler: heard the stock cpu cooler was loud and a lot of people suggested this one since i wasn't overclocking

mobo: has everything i need and then some! ($10 mail in rebate)

ram: got this for a great deal on newegg with a promo code

hdd: i was going to get an ssd but i bailed last minute because my budget was already WAY over! still works great though compared to what i was used to (5400rpm hdds on previous laptops)

gpu: awesome! modded skyrim with some stuff from steam workshop, handles it really well! (maybe future youtube benchmarks) ($30 mail in rebate)

case: its okay! cheap, looks awesome! i wish there was a tad better cable management though! also paint chips easily! ($10 mail in rebate)

psu: works, semi modular, 80+ bronze AND matches my ram ;] ($10 mail in rebate)

optical drive: opens, closes, writes discs

os: before anyone shames me for pirating...I got this from a friend who works at a computer repair place...windows 7 rules!

monitor: WOW! amazing! love this thing! also got it for a STEAL on newegg! its refurbished but you wouldn't know it unless i told you! which i just did....

wifi adapter: works just like its supposed to! my room is in a basement and i use my mom's hotspot (her room is above mine)

keyboard: ok for now i just needed something cheap until i can upgrade in the future

mouse: came free with my college laptop!

PS: I KNOW CABLE MANAGEMENT IS SUB-PAR BUT EVERY TIME I TRY TO MANAGE THE ONES IN FRONT OF THE RED LED FAN THE FRONT PANEL CONNECTORS COME OUT AND THEY ARE A PAIN IN THE BEHIND TO GET BACK IN! oh and sorry the pictures uploaded in the wrong order! by the way, I did change the orientation of my cpu cooler to exhaust out of the top of the case!

update 10/21/14 overclocked gpu from 933/1250 to 1140/1445 without changing stock voltage on msi afterburner and saw a 10-20 fps increase in most game benchmarks! also went from a 5893 to a 6662 on 3d mark firestrike! AMAZING! super impressed

I think Kingston and G.Skill RAM is ugly as all get out, but this is a good looking build. I was about to ask why you got the Ultimate version of Windows 7, but then I saw that you got it for free. Good work.

Solid Build! I had the same cooler and CPU combo and was able to OC stable to 4.3ghz! Great build, but I get so jealous seeing these USD prices lol I paid $270+ tax for a 270x in Canada.

whats your voltage on your overclock I just tried to do 4.2 and did prime 95 and got an error in core 7 and 8 within like a minute on stock voltage..do you think stock voltage cased the error because cores 7 and 8 were only running like 1.5-3.5%

  • 1 point

From what I read though, core 7-8 always fail in prime95 no matter what, it's just the way they read the cores. Doesn't mean the OC is bad. I updated my BIOS and it wiped my OC profile and I've been too lazy to set it up again as I've taken a break from PC gaming.

ouch that sucks! yea i was excited to get a 280 for just little over the price of a 270x (including mir) i may overclock someday but for now im just gonna chill! lol

PC gaming will do that to you (send you over-budget, i mean). glad to see you decided to dip into the wonderful community. the real fun begins when you start taking advantage of Humble Bundles and Steam sales. :D

for ~$800, it's a great setup; i have something similar, except it's an FX-8350 and an Nvidia GTX570 (that will soon be replaced by an R9 290). i'm not sure if a two-year-old AMD platform and Windows 7 would be considered "future-proofing", but perhaps when future software gets written for multiple threads it might show its value; even then, something much better would have come along. the graphics card, on the other hand, may last you a while, so there's at least that to look forward to.

overall, though, i commend you for staying below $1000 on such a great gaming PC (not like it's that hard with an AMD-based platform). it should serve you well for a few years.

yea i just went with windows 7 for now but the beauty of having a pc repair friend is free operating systems! so if i need to i can always get a different one from him! thanks! i also have bought a few games during the summer sale (before i even had the pc built) just to be prepared lol

very very nice build! welcome to DIY pc build!

One thing i'd recommend though is that in a near future I suggest you to save up 100 bucks and get an SSD card. SSD seems to be the best bang for buck if you want to speed up the overall performance of PC.

I really suggest buying Crucial MX100. Crucial is very good for SSD and MX100 is much much cheaper and do better than lots of other SSD even as an entry level SSD.

Great set up for the price! I just bought this case for my first build. I hope cable management is not a SOB.....

it was too terrible the main downer for me is that the hole where the motherboard power connector loops through wasn't big enough for the end of my cord to fit through so i had to route it in front of my gpu and then under my exhaust fan and plug it in! and the little bundle by my front intake fan! but its not too terrible! i could fix it if my dang front panel connectors wouldn't keep unplugging themselves!

what kind of fps are you getting while playing games on ultra ?

  • 1 point

so far the only graphic intensive game ive tested it on is skyrim with everything cranked up i get 60fps steady (of course vsync is on) i added a graphic mod to whiterun to test it some more and i got 30 in the city but when I cranked AA down to 4x i got about 35 so 2x would probably get around 40! ill let you know how i do on others...currently downloading thief on steam

hey! the 270 is pretty great as well i originally planned on getting a 270 now and then crossfiring a year or 2 down the road! but i saw this for 239.99 plus 30 mir and jumped on it

I think your build is really solid! You spent money on the important components for a gaming build. Even though the extra cores won't help you, buying a cheaper processor let you get a better graphics card.

Since I don't really have any recommendations, I'll use this space to explain why the extra cores won't help in gaming:

1) Amdahl's law. In a nutshell, shooters and most other games are inherently single thread-heavy and there's nothing that can be done about it.

2) The 6 available cores* used in both next-gen consoles need to be split among central processing and graphics processing. So console ports won't effectively use more than four cores, probably not even more than two.

* The XBox One runs three operating systems. One is a bare metal hypervisor, on top of which the other two run. One of those operating systems is for apps, it is always on and two cores are always dedicated to it. This leaves six cores for the gaming OS.

  • 1 point

yea i do wish i wouldve gotten the fx 6300 i knew they wouldnt really help in gaming now but i got them for streaming and stuff like that! but im sure the 6300 would have done that fine! but the 8320 was at a good price at the time so i got it anyway

  • 1 point

The 8320 won't bottleneck your graphics card. It's fine. How much CPU utilization do you get during gaming?

Also the 8 cores will help with some things, like running VM's. Have you taken any computer science classes?

Awesome build. Do you really need a 750w minimum power supply for that GPU?

  • 1 point

thanks! and i dont think so i have asked around and was worried about that for awhile but on newegg it says that the 280x requires 500w and the 280 requires 750...so that made zero since.. so i went with 650 as people i asked on newegg and whatnot said 650 would be plenty as long as i wasnt crossfiring

awesome i feel like a noob on there no friends :( lol but it's a great build. I've played everything at maxed settings so far except metro last light but all i had to do was lower AA. That game is pretty intense on gpus anyway though. You won't be disappointed!

  • 1 point

Great build! Almost identical the one I'm planning next month except I'm gonna save a bit and go for the FX 6300 and the lower clocked non black edition r9 280 DD. I'm split between the gigabyte mobo you have and the ASUS M5A97 R2.0 as they're comparable for price and ratings.

I went on a similar budget journey to you I think. My first plan was.. console killer! I can get an AMD APU and play most current games super cheap (£350 build) then.. maybe I'll go for the FX processor and a decent GPU (R7 or GTX 750) and I'm futureproofed (£400 build) then.. screw it let's get a beefier GPU and max out some games! (£500 build)

  • 1 point

lol yea I got the gigabyte board mainly for aesthetics, i know that's terrible but i made sure it had good reviews too! the asus would probably be the best quality you can get but gigabyte still makes great boards, with a lifetime warranty! and it also has a coating on it to help protect against static electricity, which eased my stress about building my first pc! but all in all they are both good options! and in hindsight i probably could've have gotten by with the 6300 but i was greedy and wanted the extra cores! right now theres a really good deal on the sapphire 280x if your willing to spend an extra $30!

  • 1 point

Agreed, the gigabyte board looks so sweet all in black- definitely a consideration if you have a side window!

"R9 280x? Don't tempt me, Frodo!" Seriously, I only just sold myself on upping from the 270x! Besides the prices are kind of awkward to compare, at the moment in the UK the cheapest 280x is the XFX not Sapphire and about $60-70 price jump. In general components are so much more expensive here- I switched my current part list from UK to USA default and had a little cry when I realised it would cost me £100/ $160 less to make the exact same rig in the states.

  • 1 point

oh yea thats true! but I bought my 280 for $239 and the other day the sapphire 280x was 239...i almost threw up lol, but yea the sapphire one right now is 260 usd here soooo yea!

I'm in the process of building the very same components as you, although the RAM and PSU is different. The RAM i went for was GSkill Trident X 2400MHz modules. Just subbed you on Youtube BTW, so will be having a watch of some of your vids - starting with the build vid. ;)

looks great! got a lot of similar stuff I'm slowly gathering together to put into mine :) ..although I think this will beat it a little :P

  • 1 point

so on newegg the graphics card said a minimum of 750w and you have a 650w does it run like it should?

  • 1 point

Yea it runs fine! As long as you don't overclock anything!

  • 1 point

Wow, I've just finished working on a new build with the same case. I didn't realise it was so old!

I notice your case had the same problem I spent an hour or two fixing last night. The front USB sockets were upside down! In all the official photos, they're the right way up..

I don't see a problem with your cable management. But that could be just because this is my first build where I bothered to do ANY cable management.. :)
