Description

I use this build as my FreeNAS server on my network. This thing is more than adequate for what I'm trying to do, which is run a storage server with a few jails, like CrashPlan and Plex.

NOTE: The last image is a screen grab from FreeNAS's Reporting tab showing the CPU and load figures, since some of you were interested. Even though it's only an i3, it's a GOOD i3 -- and a bit overpowered for the box. I bought a Haswell with AES-NI on purpose because I am encrypting the pool of data that will live here.

Great build, glad it works out for you. You're cable management is excellent! +1

Thanks! Good cable management takes time, but makes all the difference for the "wow" factor, not to mention good airflow.

SM is awesome! I definitely like the IPMI and server-grade features this board offers.

Very nice. I have been thinking of building a FreeNAS box. Question for you if you don't mind. It appears you have drives connected to both SATA 3, and SATA 6 ports. Are there any set up issues with connecting drives in the same raid to two different speed interfaces?

They are, but I'm not having any issues. I debated running on only the first four, but I figured that I wanted all 6 connected just in case I wanted to add two more HDDs. Also, there are no config settings for the SATA mode in the BIOS, so I assume that they'll drive at the max speed of the 3G bus when ZFS calls for data. Also, FreeNAS had 0 issues with the setup when I created the initial zpool. It didn't seem to care that two of the four drives are 6G and the others are 3G.

Good to know. Thank you very much. My better half as been hinting that we should build something like this, and that was one of the things I had not seen covered in any build guides.

Nice job! What's the CPU usage?

Super low at this point because I haven't configured the jails yet. I'm in the process of migrating data. Load averages are 0.37 0.30 0.25 right now. I've added a screen grab above of the CPU and load figures from FreeNAS's Reporting tab.

Nice build. What's the USB stick for?

Most likely to do the Operating System Installation....

Actually, that's what FreeNAS is on. I had a 2nd USB that I used as an install drive to push FreeNAS to the SanDisk.
