Description

I am FINALLY completely finished. After a month of deciding and two weeks of waiting (thanks ikea), I have my desk and monitor setup and have finally finished overclocking. I use this build for light photo editing (I'm no pro) and gaming at 3440x1440. Yes, I KNOW, 32gb RAM and 980ti SLI is overkill, but I can play any game I want at maxed out settings and that makes me happy :). My 5820k is overclocked at 4.3 1-2 core ratio and 4.2 3-6 core ratio @1.23v. I have pretty high fan profiles so I typically idle at 31C, get around 60C under a heavy load, and hit 81C max at full load from stress testing. I'm very pleased with the performance from the 5820k. The highest I could get my 980ti's overclock is +171 base clock and +86 on the memory. Only really overclock for fun and I usually just run them on the factory EVGA overclock for max stability. I love the Corsair Air 240 and the mATX size. My goal was to make a powerful, small pc and I'm very happy with the outcome.

Oh and I painted the Gaara / Shukaku figure myself back in high school :)

26.04.16 Update

I changed out my NH-U9S for a NH-C14S. I don't know if I should be impressed with the U9S or disappointed in the C14S... Idle temp had no change (no big deal) and max load temp only dropped about 4C? I was expecting much better results going from a 92mm to 140mm cooler.. But I do prefer how it looks and I guess every degree counts. I am able to run my case fans and CPU fans at lower RMPs and achieve close to the same temps so it is noticeably quieter.

My white cold cathode was getting rather hot??? So I switched it for a RGB LED strip. It really like that.

Replaced my keyboard with a Corsair STRAFE RGB. I am in love with it!

Great build, I've got a 240 and a 540 love em, just I can never enjoy the noctua colours, I think Noctuas PPC fans with white chromax vibration pads would have looked nice also, :)

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I thought about that but they do not make 92mm or 80mm iPPC fans or chromax yet. So my CPU cooler and exhaust would still be brown

Bexy 5 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

True :). Forgot about that lol, I used some nanoxia quiet 80mm fan because the blades were green to go with the green build. But finding the exact fans you want in 80mm or 92mm is quite hard :)

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 36 months ago

Yeah I searched and searched because originally I didn't like the brown. I almost got redux fans but that would be downgrading in performance. I searched for so long that the brown grew on me and now I kinda like it lol

Hankenstein 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

love this type of setup, simple and sexy

joshzpants 3 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

looks really great! For some reason I love the way that noctua fans look in high end builds like this

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 36 months ago

Thanks! I think they look best in a light coloured case which is why I stuck with white.

Squishbean1 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Whenever something has noctua case fans, you might as well assume it costs at least 3 grand.

Build looks beautiful though.

soopersrs 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

I have a system in the 540 Air. How easy was it to build in the 240? Love the setup btw.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Its kinda a challenge and my only complaint is that I feel limited. I would love to be able to put 140mm fans on the front and run a 160mm tall CPU cooler. But I also wanted it small and wanted to achieve good temps is a small form-factor build. If I could go back, I would have maybe got a full ATX mobo and used a silver Cooltek W2 case. But good luck getting one of those in the US lol

powerofjoules 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

How do you like your monitor? I was thinking of buying a curved monitor but it just seems so odd to me. +1 for a kickass pc though, props to you!

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 4 points 36 months ago

Dude this monitor changed my life lol. I was gaming on a 40" 4k tv (thats why I have the 980ti SLI) so I was worried it wouldn't look as sharp. Its like a whole different experience! The curved screen is easy on your eyes and seems more natural to me. And the ultra wide ratio is perfect for gaming and multitasking! You can have two windows open in split screen and its like working on dual monitors. I HIGHLY recommend this monitor.

Berfs1 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

About the monitor, I have a better suggestion. How about that Dell monitor at 2560 x 1440, 1 ms, 144 hz?

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Because I wanted 3440x1440, this one was on sale, it had good reviews, and I like Samsung lol

Berfs1 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

ok.

MatthijsR 1 point 36 months ago

Nice build! I like the way you have placed the Corsair air 240, it just looks like a completely different case all of a sudden with the windows on top.

mcfcarter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Nice build. Just planing build one with the same case for wife!! certainly learned a lot from your build. One question, what do you think of Logisys Cold Cathode White and how do you put it? also if possible, please put more picture with light off so I can get the idea what it is look like in the dark. Thanks~

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I like them! I had blue at one time but obviously it didn't match so I put the white ones in. I have the one on the top (right about CPU cooler) just zip-tied to the chassis in the slot meant for mounting a fan, and the one on the front I just have taped to my front intake fans with 3M double-sided tape. Yeah I'll try to get some when I get off work. And my only complaint about the Logisys cold cathodes is that they seem kinda cheap and the wires are VERY short.

mcfcarter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Thanks for the reply! I'm kind of struggle about the lighting. Let me ask this: in your opinion, which one is better, one white led lighting or four white led case fan? I kind of worried the later ones are not bright enough.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I have not dealt with any LED fans because I'm very particular and I think fans should be for cooling only, not to make the build look pretty. So I don't really have much of an opinion. But I have seen a few builds with LED fans and I was surprised at how bright they were!

sanchezliny 1 point 36 months ago

I'm personally not a fan of small form factor cases but you did it very well and had great cable management and I really liked the part choices. Well done. +1

My thought on the fans: The performance and build quality on the Noctua fans is great. However, personally i think the colors are just hideous.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Noctua's colours took awhile to grow on me, now I actually like them lol

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I dropped below 60fps once when playing The Witcher 3 in ultra settings with hair works AA set to x8.. I was fighting a fiend lol.

bart954 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

Nice!! I cant wait to get another TI right now I just got the one but I really have nothing to complain about other than I cant run past 1920x1080 something in my settings wont let me go up in resolution.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

That's odd? What's the res of your monitor? My 970 build is hooked up to my 4k TV. I only play in 1080p but I can put it on 4k if I won't (which would probably murder my 970 lol). Is your system res set passed 1080? Maybe that's why?

bart954 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

I play on a 4k tv as well every time I try to set my res past 1080 it goes to the no display found screen, Then reverts back to 1080 my old pc was hooked up to the same TV same HDMI cable, And I could switch resolutions no problem. So the TV is good the HDMI cable is good the 980ti should be good I just cant figure it out my other card was a EVGA GTX 760 4gig and it would display 4k but just ran like crap.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Huh.. No idea here.. When I had one 980ti, I could play in 4k (just couldn't turn setting up) just fine.

fadelessevo 1 point 36 months ago

I love how the Air 240 looks oriented on its side, as in the vents go all along the top, vs along just 1 side. Makes it look like a different case altogether.

And cool sticking the Noctua logo on the front as well. Great build!

Oh nice. I have the same mouse pad as well.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

The mouse and keyboard I just had laying around from when I use to hook my macbook up to a monitor. I'm OCD and my stuff has to match so I use them cause they match my case and monitor stand lol

jjkfeng 7 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Eli, bravo @ your build

I am wondering, how is the noise/sound of this build with that many fans and on top of your desk?

I have the same case, but I have yet populate all the fan slots in fear of this issue.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

It's really not bad at all, the Noctua fans are so quiet. My CPU and exhaust fans never make and sound and my NF-F12s on the front aren't really noticeable until 1300 RPMs or so. But my GPUs sound like jet engines when they kick up!

jjkfeng 7 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Btw, is this the remote controlled adjustable height desk?

Great Build Nice Work

Bloo3336 7 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Some people might find that overkill however I think it's a great idea because now you won't have to buy another PC for quite a few years. The part that really made me laugh was seeing the mac keyboard and mouse on that desk. It works well with the colors though so nice. Beautiful cable management and the whole inside looks nice. Those 980Ti's look huge in comparison to the motherboard and case. Overall a very nice build and I hope nothing ever goes wrong, if it doesn't this should last you quite some time lol.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

That's the idea, powerful and future proof. Yeah, I've been thinking on getting a mechanical keyboard and a different mouse. Im not happy with my Logitech mouse and actually find the apple one to be more accurate. So between that and the colours matching, I thought it to be the best choice for now lol

Bloo3336 7 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

I've had to use the apple keyboard and mouse(Thanks high school /s) but personally I don't like the feel of that keyboard. I've a Logitech wireless keyboard and I tend not to use it seeing as I've an old Dell wired keyboard and mouse which feel better to me and give a better response.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

I don't mind my wireless Logitech keyboard but I hate the mouse. Only other ones I had were my apple stuff lol.

Bloo3336 7 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

It actually looks very nice there. I wouldn't mind the apple keyboard so much if it's keys were higher up, which happens to be why I tend to use this Dell keyboard instead of the Logitech, and I don't like the scroll ball on the apple mouse.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

I don't mind the keyboard at all but yeah the ball and not having two separated left and right buttons sucks sometimes.

Nuxsor 3 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Loving that case. Loving dual 980's. Loving those temps. I'm lovin' it

ThisIsEduardo 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

Love the build and colors. Love the aesthetics of the Apple KB also...love the noctua fans. I use it myself. That case is HUGE though!

A few questions.

Why all the SSD's?...

And for such an expensive build, why 2133 ram? Wouldn't 16gb of faster ram give you better performance? Seems you spared no expense here anyway.

and the monitor, i've been considering going from dual screen to ultra wide myself...

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

The case does look big but its one of the smallest mATX cases I could find, sitting it on its side kinda makes it look bigger too lol.

Well, the 850pro is my OS drive, the 960gb Ultra 2 has all my games, the SM951 has my photos (my mobo's m.2 slot is only x2 so its not much fast than a 2.5" ssd), and the 240gb Ultra 2 has my music. I like all my stuff separate and organized lol, obviously.

Well from the research I've done on RAM (and I'm no expert, this is only my 2nd build), when comparing RAM's speed to how fast it communicates with the CPU, its only nano seconds of a difference. So why spend the extra money for 10 millionths of a second faster RAM? Not to mention I wanted RAM without heatsinks and it was cheap :)

The monitor is amazing and completely changes your gaming and multitasking experience! I highly recommend it. When I do split screen with two windows, its just like have to monitors but closer together, its great.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Oh and its nice to get a positive comment on my apple keyboard instead of a comment asking WHY!? as if it completely ruins my build lol. I'm not pro apple or windows or anything. I buy what I like lol.

Props. I aspire to build a similar mATX build such as this. Small, easy on the eyes, and powerful. Not sure about that mouse and keyboard though :/

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Lol, I never thought so many people would point out the mouse and keyboard. It's just what I had laying around from when I use hook my macbook up to a monitor. I used it because I've been very disappointed with the performance of my Logitech mouse and the apple mouse is actually more accurate. I'm also extremely OCD so I liked that the colours match my case and monitor stand :). And thanks for the compliment! :)

VonKessler 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I foresee a possible K70 and G502/G900 in your future.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

I actually played around with my G602 and I have it working flawlessly so I will probably stick with it. It is sooooo much better than the apple mouse lol. The K70 does look pretty sleek. Don't really know anything about it, but I like the looks of the Tt eSPORTS POSEIDON Z RGB as well.

xXMegasteel32Xx 1 point 35 months ago

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Nope. I like to live dangerously.. >:)

Berfs1 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

So, about the OC, did you run a stress test for at least 6 hours? I am specifically talking about the 6 core ratio, because with what you have, 4.2 GHz, at 1.23 V (on the 5820K; the 4790K and 6700K have a better chance on 4 cores) doesn't sound stable for a long time. If you do an OC like that, at least try for stability. My RAM is OC to 2000 MHz (DDR3), and I tried 2200 MHz, but it wasn't stable for a very long time (~20 minutes, then it crashed). If your 4.2 GHz OC on 6 cores is stable though, way to go! By the way, you do have a nice overall build. But why so many SSDs? Is it in RAID?

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

How does that not sound stable? Most get 4.4 to 4.6 out of the 5820k. Only reason I have not pushed it higher is because my cooler can't keep up. 4.2 is only 100MHz higher than what my mobo auto tunes it to lol. So no, I didnt let it run for 6 hours, only about 2. But being I didn't even really push it (as said, due to temps) I didn't find it necessary to run more than 2 hours. And I've never had it crash from long game sessions on witcher 3 in ultra setting at 3440x1440.

850pro - OS, Ultra 2 960gb - games, Ultra 2 240gb - music, SM951 - photos (mobo m.2 slot is only x2 so it's not much faster than my 850pro)

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

I tried getting it to 4.4 but temps hit 85C within 5mins, and that's why I went down to 4.2 on all cores and did the per core OC

Berfs1 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I meant on 6 cores, and if it is stable for 2 hours, then it should be fine. And for the storage, I understand, I have 3 hard drives in my pc, 1 for music, 1 for windows, and 1 for downloads.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

That's what I am saying. Google 5820k overclocking. Most get 4.4-4.6 on all cores. I just can't because I have a low profile air cooler that isn't even recommended for overclocking a 140W TDP cpu. Most people liquid cool a 5820K but I prefer air cooling.

Berfs1 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I also prefer air cooling, but could you send me a link that contains an example of your 5820K overclocking? I did look it up, but I want to see from your perspective.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Unless I'm misunderstanding that article and some forums that I've read, I was under the impression that they achieved 4.6 on all cores.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Oh and on the subject of coolers. I had an H105 AIO on my 6600k build and changed to a NH-L12 with a iPPC NF-12. MUCH lower temps! Maybe was because of thermal paste?

Kuanxq 1 point 35 months ago

Hey there ! Big newbie here when it comes to building a PC. I've been wanting to do a microATX build for the same reason as you and I've wondered if you had any problems fitting the Noctua NH-U9S in there ?

Thanks ! Btw, LEGENDARY build man !

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Thanks! :D
Nope! Not at all. The top of the U9S doesn't touch the plexi at all. Maybe about 1cm away? And there is just enough room to get your finger down to unlock the top GPU. My power cables running to my GPUs do touch the plexi but not too bad. And I highly recommend adding a second NF-A9 if you're going with a 140w CPU. I am REALLY surprised at how well the U9S cooled the 5820k. I actually just upgraded to a NH-C14S and it only dropped my max temp about 4C and no change to idle temp. I'm leaving it on though cause I think it looks a little better. Only complaint is that it's aggravating to remove the top GPU now, but I don't have to often.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Oh if you want to see a pic of the NH-C14S on my build I can upload one

Kuanxq 1 point 35 months ago

Awesome, thank you for the very detailed answer !

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

No problem! Im about to upload pics of it with the NH-C14S now

UncreatedPython 1 point 35 months ago

Any issues with the os?

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

With Windows 10? Nope not at all. I actually switched to Mac when Windows 8 came out and I like Windows 10 so much better than 8 that I wouldn't care if I didn't have a Mac anymore. Really easy install too. Some settings can be tricky to find and you'll want to make a shortcut to control panel cause they make it hard to find. Other than that it's been great. Just did a fresh install on a customer's build and it was a breeze as well and updated quickly!

UncreatedPython 1 point 34 months ago

What does it mean by 32/64. Does that mean you can switch it once downloaded. Or before you download it you get the option to choose. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm a first time builder and a little paranoid about by accidently getting 32 bit windows

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 34 months ago

During the installation, you choose. Once a version is installed, there is no switching unless you wipe the drive and do a whole new installation again

UncreatedPython 1 point 34 months ago

Good to know. Thank you

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

krazy_kaveman 1 point 33 months ago

jarombra 1 point 33 months ago

I'd like to do a version of your build, but just playing around the partpicker, I see this warning and am wondering what you think of it:

"Noctua NH-U9S 46.4 CFM CPU Cooler and Corsair Air 240 MicroATX Mid Tower Case are not compatible."

Thanks!

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 2 points 33 months ago

It told me the same thing but obviously it fits. I didn't have to do any modifications or anything. Corsair just states that the case can hold coolers 120mm high or less but it can probably accommodate 130mm coolers. The U9S is 125mm tall so it fits just fine.

jarombra 1 point 33 months ago

I'm playing with slight modifications of your build, and swapped in a: Noctua NH-L9x65 33.8 CFM CPU Cooler. Yay? Nay? Seems like a decent substitution eh?

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Depends on the processor and if you plan on overclocking. I wouldn't dare but a L9x65 on my 5820k because the U9S can barely handle the heat. The U9S seems to cool the best out of all the Noctuas I've tried. Which include: L12, D9, U9S, and C14S. The U9S was better in my experience than all those.

daparkvid 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

I'm strongly considering getting an air 240 and putting it sideways like you have it; not sure if you've ever tried but would you know of any temperature differences sideways vs. upright?

I have tried this and there is no notable change, if any. Giving the style of the NH-U9S cooler, I figured it would make a difference with the board laying flat because it puts all the heat pipes pointing up. But it seems to have little to no effect.

Not sure if you're still around but I'm driving myself crazy trying to find data on air cooling a 6700k with an overclock that would fit in this case. You have literally the only build here that doesn't use an aio cooler so I gotta know just how well it's working for you? Why did you decide against an aio? My main issue is the pump noise even when the system is just hanging out. I just want to do a modest overclock to like 4.4 or so and can't seem to figure out if a noctua will be enough. I might just end up with an aio but I'm trying to avoid it.

Well the NH-U9S keeps my 5930k cool just fine (I've updated from the 5820K https://pcpartpicker.com/b/nsqkcf). The 5930K runs at 3.5GHz on all cores from factory, I have mine running a small overclock of 4.1GHz on all cores pulling 1.240v. It idles at about 32°C, hit in the high 50s while gaming, max temp while photo editing is usually around 62°C, and max temp from stress test is 78°C. Keep in mind the the TDP of my 5930K is 140W while the 6700K is only 95W. So it should run much cooler than mine. As far as an AIO goes, I did have an H105 in an Air 240 cooling a 6600K at one time. It was horrible.. It makes your front intake air hot because it is just the exhaust from the CPU so my GPUs had no cool air.. As far as cooling the CPU goes, it did okay but couldn't even do as well as Noctua's NH-L12! As far as air coolers go, I have used the NH-L12, NH-D9L, NH-C14s, and the NH-U9S in this case. Of those, the U9S preforms the best. But also, having a straight air flow path makes a big difference as well. Air does not like to change directions, that why I have intake on the front, tower style hair cooler blowing in the same direction, and exhaust in the back. Keeping the side exhaust that comes with the case will not flow as well. So I recommend loosing it and running two 80mms instead. BTW, according to everything you find online, the NH-U9S shouldn't fit in the Air 240, its too tall. But it does! And with no modification, my build is proof.

I can't quite tell from the pictures how much room there is for ram with heat sinks? I saw that you used just default speed ram but I wanted to go for ddr-3000 or so, will the u9s be fine with that? Also, how much clearance is there between the window and cooler?

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Well if you use the U9S as it comes with only 1 fan on the front, it has a 95x95mm footprint therefore it doesn't even overhang the RAM. But with you using a 6700K board, you will only have RAM to the right of the CPU instead of on both sides. So if it is mounted like mine, it won't be over the RAM even if you add a second fan to the back. And it's hard to tell how much clearance it has to the clear panel... Maybe 5-10mm? It's not much but it's not touching.

I know im like a year late, but how did you manage to fit 2 graphics cards in there? I have a mATX board and I can only fit 1 even though I have 2 slots for graphics cards.

eli_harper13 submitter 6 Builds 1 point 18 months ago

As long as the slots are spaced out properly (mATX has 4 slots total, so the x16 slots should be in the 1 and 3 space) and the GPUs are only 2 slots thick, it should fit. Alot of aftermarket coolers (not FE) take up more then 2 slots.

Well the desk actually has really good reviews. It can hold 220lbs and it was about 60lbs so its very sturdy.

Alot of money into it but my monitor was $1k alone, under $3.5k in just the build, not to mention not many builds out perform it

I had to pretty much fight for this desk lol. For some reason, ikea only wanted to send me the top and not the legs -_-"

Who needs legs? XD

Erm, back to the point.

Nice build, but why are there apple products in this list...

Never buy anything from Ikea. They are a bunch of drunks that can't stay sober long enough to build their own furniture!
