Description

Mostly gaming but intend to try some light production work editing videos for a YouTube channel. I do intend to overclock the CPU and have been working my way up ever so slowly as I have never done it before. So far the cooler seems pretty capable, hopefully it can keep it cool if I can get the CPU to 5GHz+ (That's the goal, however I won't be terribly upset if I can't) I may upgrade to an AiO down the road so for now it suits my needs well. As I tinker with OC and whatnot I'll add to this and fill out the rest of the info. If you have questions or tips on how to improve I'm open to hearing it.

comment on the motherboard?

So far it has been great. All the features I need and more. It is my first ASRock board and I'm very glad I went with it. The BIOS is easy to navigate and make changes. This is the first time I've ever bought a cpu/board specifically for overclocking, and it lays all that out pretty well.

also what monitor are you using?

I have an off-brand. Pixio PX277, 27 inch, 1440p 144hz, IPS. So far it works great

nice looking clean build!

How have your temps been with the Quad Lumi? Torn between that and the Cooler Master MA610P for air cooling. You can definitely light overclock with them but I don't think you can hit that high with an air cooler. I've been seeing 4.6 - 4.7GHz on air being a common hit (not including silicon lottery winnings), but best of luck and great build!

Sorry for the late reply, I've had a lot going on since I posted this. It has been surprisingly good. I have been able to get 4.8GHz at 1.25v and the cooler has been keeping it around 72 degrees under full load. I tried going higher but couldn't keep a stable OC. I may upgrade to an AiO down the road to try and push it further but I'm pretty broke now between this build and Christmas so it'll have to wait. I was also considering the MA610P and it's probably a very solid choice as well.

Were you able to OC your RAM to 3000Mhz?

NRTP submitter 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

Yep, OC to 3000Mhz no issues, I tried to push it to 3200Mhz but it was unstable.

How is your cpu coping with the cooler as I note these 8700k's get hot and require more powerfull coolers?

NRTP submitter 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

I usually keep mine at 4.8 all core and I’m typically 72-75c. I’m pleased with it. I haven’t been able to get higher than that though. Starts to go over 80c so I won’t try to push it higher again until I get a water cooler. No idea when that’ll be. The case has great airflow so it might be a combination of cooler with case airflow

I was just looking at water cooling as alternative but not as custum loop as its compicated, may be as AIO system but not sure how it handles i7 8700K chip as they get hot and even more when over clockled.
