Description

This is my very first build and I'm very proud of it. I've started gathering my parts back in March, and now it's definitive. I needed a new computer and my goal was playing esports games at 1080p and some heavier ones (Rise of Tomb Raider, occasionally). I accomplished my goal, with some aesthetics aswell.

UserBenchmark Profile

CPU & Cooler - This processor is enough to fulfill my daily usage. It comes from a previous build with a restricted budget, it works very good with no issues (I don't plan to overclock). I also got myself the NZXT Kraken liquid cooler since it's a beauty. It's really helping me with high temps.

Motherboard - I decided that I wanted a clean black & white motherboard (it even has white backlight) It's perfect and solved the lack of fans connectors I had before.

Ram - Kinda basic ram, the cheapest I found and they work fine. I couldn't afford the RGB versions for double the price because it's not worth it.

Storage - First time with a SSD and this Samsung is perfect.

Case - I think NZXT and Phanteks have the best looking cases. I really wanted a full glass window since the plexi ones are crap. It's surprisingly compact and I love it!

Power Supply - I first had a Corsair VS550 and after 1 week I heard a very loud noise coming from it, even without playing. It disappeared but I gave it to my dad. I picked up another PSU, a CX450 and it immediately started the same annoying noise. I've after realized that low budget Corsair PSU suffer from extreme coil whine. NEVER AGAIN. At last I decided to buy a Seasonic S12II 520W for almost the same price, and it's just perfect.

GPU - I picked the cheapest 1060 model I found online. Works fine.

Others - I bought white cord cables cause I hate the basic ones, an RGB strip light and put it behind the monitor. The other purple LED strips inside the case are in the right side. I even got a new keyboard and mouse and I love the colors.

I used a Canon EOS 1100D and my Iphone 6S to take these pictures.

I'm a big fan of the 6100. Makes me happy to see it in any build :)

Yes the 6100 is very good for what it can offer. I can do whatever I want with no problems! (and no bottle neck, as some people may think)

Wonderful build my friend. I've researched this and if you're playing games like CSGO, DOTA 2 (+1 for VS figurine) LoL and such, there is absolutely ZERO bottle necking with an i3 and a 1060. In fact, games like BF4 and Witcher 3 show no bottle necking on max settings with an i3 vs an i5, which most people consider the sweet spot for gaming. And as a few posters have already pointed out, yeah the Kraken is overkill but hey it looks nice, works great and you've got yourself a slick cooler for years to come. To me, aesthetics are as important to the build as anything else. Congrats again, and enjoy. That's a sweet setup!

Thank you mate! Appreciated, and yeah I've seen zero bottle neck in the benchmark I've seen with this i3 6100, my build is only aimed to "light" gaming so it fits perfectly. Probably one day I'll upgrade to a i5, but months ago I had no money left cause my laptop died and I only could afford an i3, which is fine.

I don't like the stock air cooler from Intel so I picked up an x42 for the sake of future updates. But people rather make jokes so yeah, good for them. I'm so happy with what I've got! ;-)

Cool looking build and good call on the Masterkeys combo. I picked that up for my most recent build since I was already over-budget and I'm not disappointed. Great M&K for the price.

Edit: btw I'm a bit jealous of your thermaltake rings. I was debating between that and some white corsair LEDs. I went with the corsairs but seeing those rings gives me some regret. They look great.

I love that Masterkey combo, great value for the price! I wanted to upgrade from a standard keyboard and Razer Orochi, and I found it on Amazon.

Yeah the thermaltake rings are awesome! I could have saved some more for the NZXT Aer RGB fans, but I think they're a bit too pricey. I'm happy with these, specially if I turn off the leds inside the case.

Shows that you don't have to spend a lot to have an incredibly good looking build. Well done!

Also why are you using the X42 to cool th... jkjk. +1

thank you so much! I love how it looks too, I'll probably put some more colors in next updates though! (I'm reeeelly tempted to buy Red/Purple braided cables) I also have purple leds but for now I'm sticking with these.

Absolutely sick build my guy. Is there anything you would've done different in hindsight?

  • 2 points

Well, months ago my laptop died and I needed a new computer so I rushed buying an i3, which is not bad. Perhaps an i5 is more futureproof but I'm not even sure if I could take advantage of it.
For the GPU, I tried an RX480 for 2 weeks but I wasn't satisfied: too high temperatures. This NZXT S340 Elite case looks amazing and it's not even big, I think a Phanteks P400 (tempered glass version) would have been a valid alternative though!

I really love the look of the LED strip at the bottom and want that same look for my case. The NZXT S340 Elite is about 43cm long. How long was the LED strip you used at the bottom? Only having a 30cm strip gives it that look?

  • 1 point

If you mean the white led strip, yes 30cm will do the job. I'm not keeping the strips that visible anymore though. I like it darker :P

  • 1 point

Ah perfect thanks! You have strips on all sides of the case though no? I was thinking of just one strip along the bottom and will see how that looks!

  • 1 point

The white version you saw has two 30 cm strips (splitted, same molex) top and bottom. My recent purple one has only 1 on the right side, and gives a more relaxing effect imo. (Ps: if you live in EU you can find a variety of sizes on amazon, from 15cm to 50cm any color :D brand Top Led)

Why not scrap the liquid cooler and buy an i5 with a heat sync for the same price.

  • 3 points

It comes from a previous build. I couldn't just throw a processor away, so I decided to keep it for the moment :) I'll probably upgrade sooner or later

You could maybe have spent less on the MOBO for an I5? Or was aethstetic the main point you were going for?

  • 1 point

There's no much alternatives, this ATX mobo was one of the cheapest (Italian prices, B250 chipset) so I just picked up the one I liked :D

Hey, it's the European version of Galax, pretty popular in usa :D

How is that CPU cooler? I have a corsair case but the NZXT liquid cooler is just so beautiful.

  • 1 point

Works great and it's super quiet (Silent mode, no noise at all) temperature never goes over 35 c° and the fan is only set at 25%
However, I haven't tried a stress test yet. I'm really happy with all these colors combinations!
I love the pipes too, no cheap plastic only high quality materials.

What if you just overclocked the i3 to the power of an i7?

overclocking cant magically turn a i3 into a i7...
