This was a work in progress build; something that I have been adding to since March 2013. The original build cost me around $1150 and I haven't stopped adding since! The primary intention of this build is to game at 1440p. I also do quite a bit of photo editing for the other builds I work on from time to time. I also dabble in video recording/editing as well as music production. The name of the computer comes from my nickname Sambo Rambo.
The FX-8350 was my choice over the 3570K at the time of this build. I needed something that would perform well in games as well as handle some occasional editing. I liked the idea of having the extra cores over the i5. I've spent a lot of time overclocking and benching this chip and have found that, while I don't have the golden 5 GHz CPU, I'm very pleased with the performance I get for under $200. The max stable overclock I've achieved is just shy of 4.8 with temps stable under normal use. For benchmarking purposes I overclock as high as possible, but for casual use I set it at 4.5 with 1.38V.
I am very pleased with the Kraken X60 from NZXT. It allows me to overclock as high as I want while still maintaining safe temps. I have replaced the stock fans, which were quite loud at high speed, with some NZXT Airflow 140s and Noctua NF-A14s in push pull. In this setup it stays very quiet and very cool, even when burn testing using Prime 95. My only complaint is that the tubing is a little long. Though I suppose it would be worse if the tubing was too short.
I wanted a good overclocking motherboard with plenty of enthusiast features that I would actually use. I'm really happy with the ASUS BIOS and general ease of use. Even for an advanced user, it's refreshing to see loads of features on a board under $200. ASUS has done a great job with their TUF series.
I grabbed 16 GB on sale. I probably could have gotten away with 8 GB, but I couldn't pass that sale. With the level of editing I do, I occasionally use more than 8 GB so I'm glad I ended up getting more to start.
It's fast. Cold starts in around 13 seconds. Read/writes are snappy. Definitely recommended.
The first card was purchased from Newegg in March 2013 and the second from Ebay in July 2013. I was able to snipe the second card during a bid competition. I've gotten pretty solid performance from these cards in most of the games I play. Not everything supports Crossfire, but for the things that do you definitely notice it. I've run quite a few benchmarks to showcase the numbers. Those will be posted below from time to time. Let me know if there is a game you would like to see benched and I'll see if I can get my hands on it.
The Switch 810 is my dream case. I really like windowed cases with a ton of room for fans and cable routing options. I've loaded this thing with fans and have taken advantage of all the space behind the tray. My only dislike is that the front intake isn't fully filtered. I clean it out about every other month, but that's probably because I'm crazy. I filled the front panel bays with a Blu-ray drive, a NZXT Sentry LX fan controller, and the hotswap bay hides a 3 TB HDD.
The NZXT fans are really nice. They are very quiet even at full RPMs and give off enough light to light up the case, while not illuminating the entire room. The Xigmatek fans are beasts. They blow so much air, but get a tad loud when ramped up. The blade design is awesome and curve the lights to a sweet pattern. They also are 4 pin, so you can control them with your motherboard software. The Noctua's replaced the stock Kraken X60 fans that were way too loud. Even with this amount of fans the system stays fairly quiet.
I needed a PSU for some future upgrades and I'm glad I got the HX850. I'm probably pushing it when overclocking and putting it under heavy loads, but I'm confident in Corsair. It stays quiet under idle and normal conditions. It does tend to ramp up a bit during load situations, but that is to be expected.
Have a large Blu Ray collection. I know, I know everything is digital now, but I didn't feel like buying more HDD space to store all of my movies quite yet. Future purchase for sure.
The Osmium caught my eye right away with the all white LEDs. I had heard that mechanical switches are amazing so I thought I would go big. I haven't been led astray. This keyboard is very nice. The switches are firm, but have a nice tactile feel to them and aren't loud like the MX Blues.
The mouse has taken some getting used to. The triple button on top was a bit strange at first, but it really is handy to have. I normally use it for something that I don't always need, but is very quick to access if the need arises. I like to play a few MMOs from time to time so the mouse just works for me.
I took a shot at a Korean IPS monitor and was not let down. This is the perfect pixel Qnix Evolution II with a matte screen. There are so many pixels. I bought this from Amazon and it arrived at my house in three days from Korea. That's damn fast if you ask me. There are no dead pixels and only minor top and bottom edge bleed when the screen is entirely black. If you can get one of these on sale, get it.
