Description

Thanks for stumbling across my build! Been working on gathering parts for this since July last year. Been a bit of a bumpy ride, but alas, we've reached the end:

Nuit d'Au

A big shoutout goes to those who helped me pick out the right parts. A few honorable mentions are Chillsabre, vagabond139, pegotico, and GentelmanShark.

Special shoutout goes to jipster69 for helping me come up with the name. We brainstormed for a bit and decided to mix Nuit d'or (Night of Gold in French) with Chemistry symbols because we're nerds, thus Nuit d'Au.

Color concept came to me when I bought this motherboard. Decided to look around for some black and gold builds for inspiration and came across Arvaci's build. Decided to take the same concept, but wanted to make the gold accentuate the black, like how the motherboard's heatsinks has gold stripes. Spray painted my RAM heatsinks and Corsair fan rings. Sleeved PSU cables are Black/Vanilla Sands ordered from Beyond Customs, an MDPC-x retailer located in South Africa (great value due to the currency exchange rate!)

Purpose:

This build is for streaming and content creation for YouTube. I've been a YouTuber since 2014 and I decided it was time to dedicate more time and effort into it. Decided I needed to have something that could record demanding gameplay without breaking a sweat, and for the couple of days that I've been running this PC, it hasn't broken a sweat ;). Also, I cheaped out on a lot of parts on my first build, and while it was sufficient to run the couple of games I was initially playing, that all went to crap after my first Steam sale, when I found that I could barely run anything else.

Deals:

Parted out my initial gaming PC, with the exception of my HDD, in July and have been gathering parts since. Was able to score some great deals, as you can see:

  1. One of my church members is an Intel employee and allowed me to use his Intel discount to grab a 6700k for less than $200.

  2. I had a 60hz monitor from my original build. Found my 144hz one on LetGo. The guy used it twice and put it back in its box and just had it sitting in his room for a couple of years. Was able to grab a practically new monitor for about $75 less than retail, so score!

  3. Microsoft Store has the Mionix Castor for $45, while most other stores sell it for upwards of $60.

  4. Snagged the Orion Spectrum on Black Friday for about 40% off.

  5. My music mentor gave me his old mini mixer and DAC. Those are first on my upgrade list for the future.

I did run into a slight hiccup when first building this. A couple of pins in my CPU socket on my motherboard were bent, resulting in everything on the motherboard turning on and running on boot, but not the CPU. RMA'd my motherboard with Gigabyte and they repaired it for me. Would've taken a shorter time to RMA it through Amazon, but unfortunately, it was one of the first parts I purchased, so my 30 day grace period had long since been over.

I haven't overclocked/benchmarked yet. For now, just working on configuring my audio setup for the best recording experience.

Final Remarks:

I'm very honored to share my finished product with the PCPP community. Since I parted out my PC back in July, this site has been my home. I've learned a lot of things about PC building, and still am learning. I just helped my friend put together his first PC after his first attempt on his own wouldn't POST. Glad to be able to apply what I've learned from all the great community and staff members here to my friends and family as well. Hope you guys enjoyed the build!

P.S. There were a lot more pictures, so if anyone is interested in seeing them, I can share via Google Drive :)

Part Reviews

Motherboard

Great mobo, easy BIOS. Color scheme inspired my black/gold build idea. Love it.

Memory

10/10 for customization. Make sure you enable your XMP profile.

Storage

I tried recording how quickly this could boot to show to my friend who hadn't seen an SSD boot before. I couldn't get my camera up in time. Nuff said.

Case

Easily wins sexiest case of 2016. Great cable management. Very easy to use.

Power Supply

Do you really need another reason to buy this?

Keyboard

ROMER-G FTW! Love the minimalistic look. Doesn't give off the "gaming" keyboard vibe, but definitely performs as such.

Mouse

Feels like you're using a cloud to navigate through your computer. 10/10 dreams attained.

Custom

BRUH. It's MXL. It's Black/Gold (sexy). No brainer on purchasing this.

Custom

Saves lots of desk space and it's pretty neat.

Custom

Holds my GPU up and isn't an eyesore. Definitely recommend.

Custom

Just enough light needed to highlight the details of a sexy build. Easy to put together.

How are those monitor arms?

Amazing job btw +1

Took a bit of tweaking. Different parts of the arms can be loosened /tightened for flexibility/adjustability, but it holds my monitors up just fine. East to move the monitor out of the way when I need to get behind the PC. Was pretty easy to setup :)

And thank you! I'm glad the concept came out well :)

Planning on it! My Youtube

It's a gaming channel. Was mainly playing Ghost Recon Phantoms, but I wanted to expand. Uploading my first gameplay video since July in March. Taking the current time to properly learn video editing and practice commentary while playing. Not a whole lot of subscribers, but baby steps, right? :)

My buddy took the pictures with his Sony A6300. He has a little photography business going on ;)

The pictures outside were taken with my Sony Xperia z3v, however.

Looks great although I can't +1 due to the PCI-E cables not being perfectly lined up and straight, such a amateur mistake /s

You have earned my upvote.

Awww, well thanks anyway haha

My miscalculation; I should've ordered slightly longer cables. They pull to the left to get attached to the PSU :/

Not the end of the world. Also for a real suggestion I would get another comb for the 24 pin.

Parodying THE one and only Jipster

currently eyeless

OK... now I can see...

The picture quality, the color coordination, the cable management, the presentation are all just... beautiful.

One criticism. You need another table so you can pull that thing out and show-off more of it. Also if you go custom watercooled at any point in your life please find one of these somewhere.

If this doesn't get featured, I will cry.

  • 1 point

Haha yeah I thought I had gotten a huge enough table, but the idea of a mixer setup took up the rest of the space. Definitely something I'll put into thought.

AND OH MY GOD THAT'S A BEAUTY.

Manirelli, you heard the man. Don't make the PCPP community cry, man

how is the gpu? i heard about them catching fire but i still want to get a 1070 ftw

  • 1 point

It's great! That issue is resolved now. All devices purchased from about December 2016 should have the fix. Amazon, for some reason still has some of the old stock. I was one of the unlucky few to receive one. When it came in the mail, I called EVGA and ran my serial number by them. They shipped me a new one and took the old one :) Old one didn't explode or anything, though; I hadn't done anything super intensive on it yet ;)

  • 1 point

Nice! I definitely don't want to get the asus strix version because of the horrid customer support. When I get the gpu I'll call evga just to double check thanks!

  • 1 point

Yeah, no prob! This is really mostly through Amazon, though. Other retailers should all have updated stock by now. My guess is that the other retailers had promotions like getting Ghost Recon: Wildlands or For Honor alongside the purchase. But, yeah definitely get FTW if you can. I just love the way the logo looks in my case :]

I just thought of how perfect it would be if you painted the metal bits on the EVGA card gold.

Not exactly sure if you're the kind to do that, though.

  • 1 point

I'm not opposed to it ;)

I kept it unpainted partially because of laziness and partially because I wanted it to compliment the black and gold because of the contrast. Didn't want the gold to oversaturate, but rather accent and highlight it. Same reason why I left the motherboard heatsink stripes as they were instead of taking them off and spraying them gold as well.

  • 1 point

The stripes on the heatsink are fine, it's just that they were a shade of yellow, so you wouldn't need to paint it.

  • 1 point

Wow, really cool to see a black and gold themed build. Definitely unique! Love how you accented everything even the fans with gold.

What cables are those that they are multicolor?

  • 2 points

Thanks! I'm glad it came out the way it did. I was scared that the spray paint wouldn't match the board or the cables. Even though they're all different shades, it still looks pretty neat.

The sleeved cables are MDPC-X cables. Colors used were Black and Vanilla Sands

  • 1 point

Cool, I think I might check those cables out because I like the way the colors are arranged.

  • 1 point

When purchasing from an MDPC-X retailer, they usually give you an option to choose your pattern and your colors. Lots more options for customization :)

  • 1 point

Yeah I'm playing around with it now and I might make a rainbow 24pin cable for my future RGB oriented build.

  • 2 points

That's unique! Looking forward to it :)

I found it hidden in storage at my workplace and my supervisor said I could have it haha

What do you mean by "nuit d'au"? It should be "nuit d'eau" isn't it?

  • 3 points

Not fluent in French, but Night of Gold per Google Translator is Nuit d'or. We decided to swap out the "or" with the chemical symbol for Gold, Au. :]

  • 1 point

You're right, "nuit d'or" is correct in french. (and despite the fact that french is my native language, it still sound posh ;) )

  • 1 point

What would be the more colloquial version?

Hahaha and gotta be bourgeoisie with black/gold ;)

  • 2 points

"nuit d'or" sound really fine to me. Having said that, "nuit d'AU" is really funny. "Nuit d'au" sound like "nuit d'eau" which means "night of water".

(yes, in french, we have 4x less sound that in english, making confusions is common in this language)

  • 1 point

Ahhh hahaha I can see how that can get misunderstood. English puns ;)
