So far only half of the parts have arrived. The 100R was first along with the power supply. This allowed for some forward work on cable management which due to my undeniable O.C.D. is pretty paramount. This is my first build as I am only seventeen and it is also the first thing I have bought from my work money. Remainder of parts due on Monday. I will finish the build then and upload photos and benchmarks soon after along with some temps and overclocking speeds. [EDIT]

So, all of my parts arrived on Monday. I spent three hours assembling it and had it booting after the fourth but that's when the problems started.

The problem was that i was using an old copy of windows 7 from my old laptops hard drive. Sadly this copy was "locked" and was unmovable so I was unable to put it onto my SSD. This forced me to buy a new copy of windows 8.1. After that it was all fixed and all i had to do was assign the different jobs to the different storage devices. All that's needed now is the new monitor which should arrive in the next few days.

Only did a standard overclock on the CPU up to 4.2GHz and overclocking on the GPU was done by GPU boost 2.0 giving me a pretty decent core clock increase.

Part Reviews

Processor is fast and runs really cool while running games at ultra settings at 1080p with my hyper 212 Evo.

CPU Cooler

Keeps processor at under 65C at ultra 1080p. Only problem is mounting it is tougher than is necessary.

Looks great.Great for overclocking. Great fan settings. Overall easy to setup and easy to make everything work properly. A bit pricey though.

Really fast boots with this running only my O.S.

Pretty fast as far as hard drives go. Great price.

Video Card

Great card runs cool and runs every game ive thrown at it at a steady 60 FPS at 1080p Ultra. Fans don't turn on when its at idle so that's really handy.

Great looking.Great price. Cable management is an absolute *****. takes a lot of cable ties and brute force to get it locked down.

Power Supply

Fan is extremely quite. Slight coil whine but nothing major(Can't be heard over case fans when they're on).Cables are great, keeping the case looking clean and tidy.

I'm planning on doing a similar build, but have run into a problem with compatibility. I get this "message Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler and Corsair 100R ATX Mid Tower Case are not compatible."

Did you find that this was a problem when building?

i sent a message about this to PC part picker. No there is no problem. The compatibility is because of the way the case bulges out at the windows. If this increase in width wasn't there it wouldn't fit but because its there it does. The measurements don't include this increase.

That's brilliant. Thanks for replying. I have no worries now.

No problem.

When you put the fan in was it a tight fit, and did it look good giving that it takes up most of the width. Was thinking of a similar build but the dimensions for the 212 are too big, I've gone with a Hyper TX3 but apparently it's not good for overclocking but it's my only choice. Any opinions on how it looks and how difficult it was to get in?

leongill submitter 1 Build 1 point 41 months ago

The only difficult part of getting it in was the installation onto the motherboard as the mechanism is very finicky but the cooler fits in fine without any buckling. As for looks thats in the eyes of the beholder but i think it looks pretty fine and the fan doesn't cause problems as its on the side of the cooler.

I agree on the name, PCPARTPICKER names make me cringe most of the time.

I am also 17 and building an extremely similar pc with money from my first job. Do you have any suggestions or tips from your experience? Here's my tentative build http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Quinnv27/saved/47xzK8

I have that keyboard. It's terrible. Get the thermal take ttesports commander. Much better imo.

Hi, i would recommend going with the hyper 212 evo, id remove the DVD drive as very little things use them. I would also recommend the Corsair h2100 over the cloud as its simply a better headset and wireless. Id also recommend the bayerdynamic dt880 if you don't need the mic.
