Description

We are in the process of moving to SharePoint and are hiring a new person to join our IT department. Just like the last work rig, building in house is cheaper than going with an oem.

CPU: XEON E3 1230 V2 same as the last rig built for work, perfect fit for the job at hand.

Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO not nearly as hard to install as people say, just barely fits in the case, about 2mm of clearance.

Ram: 16 gb Should be enough to get the job done

Mobo: Asus P8B-x tried and true

Storage: Samsung evo 500gb SSD plenty of room to work with and fast boot times.

Video: Ati fire pro v4900 a card with workstation in mind.

Case: This may be the last time I ever buy a budget case. I can’t say enough bad things about this case so let me start with the good.

Well it does have cable management (barely, like really none at all) and a place for the ssd to go. It also has dust filters for the front and psu.

Now the bad

Only one exhaust fan. No top exhaust to even add another fan. Drive bays are not removable which is sad because I am only using one. Plus, the whole time I am working with it I was getting black marks all over my hands. Not sure if it is dye from the cables or just a bad paint job. Side panels feel cheap and do not come off without a bit of force. Almost forgot, the expansion port covers are not reusable, but wait it gets worse. When I went to put the usb 3.0 card in there was a problem with some random screw holes blocking the bottom slot.

I simply cannot recommend this as even a budget case.

Added a usb 3.0 card and asus xonar for sound since the mobo had neither.

forgot to add windows 7 pro for $7.00

Update 4-4-14: one of the feet broke off of the case this week :( DO NOT BUY THIS CASE

Can I ask why the $1,100+ price tag for this?

Ever price a workstation before? This is low. My workstation at work was 1900 before gpu.

Sure it doesn't need a 500gb SSS but that's what the boss wanted in it.

We prefer ecc ram so there is some added cost but nothing is really excessive.

Wow. I've never built one, just gaming rigs. I knew they were expensive, but not that much. What will the primary use for this be?

Seems like $144 for 16GB of ECC isn't that bad. Either way, nice build. Crazy how much more expensive workstations are though :) At least the 500GB 840 EVO is actually becoming reasonably priced. It's crazy how in 2 years they went from $1,000+ down to where they are now.

Web design and server management, as well as database work.

A good rule we have is more computer than you will need just incase you need it.

Interesting. I work as a front-end developer for a large company. Couldn't design without my Mac ;)

they are nice to work with. The E3 has to be the best "budget" chip out there, if you dont need igpu

i7 at the cost of i5

If you're not going to be overclocking, or anything else that needs the 4770k, like the iGPU, a Xeon will work fine

The case you used is kind of for people who are learning to build PCs I would say, not just for a budget.
