Description

I've been wanting to build a PC for over a year now, and now I finally built it. I mainly use this for school work and gaming (csgo).

My goal for this PC was to make it look very classy with the nice black and white colour scheme. Also one of my goals was to make it very quiet and I think it worked out pretty well.

As you've probably seen, my graphics card is a GTX 645 -_-. I borrowed it from a friend's old Alienware. The reason for that is that I didn't want to buy a GPU now, since Pascal will be here in a couple of months. Besides that, until now it holds up pretty well in CSGO, the only game I really play. When I've got my new GPU, I'll make a new post to show it off. I hope there will be a white GPU to fit with the colour scheme, or I'll go for something like the G1 gaming editions with the nice backplate and a LED.

Updates to come in the future (in random order):

  • I want to paint the SSD bracket white, because It think there isn't enough white down there.
  • A Pascal GPU
  • White LED Lights
  • Another 8GB kit of RAM to fill all that space in between the sticks
  • maybe a M.2 SSD
  • Another fan, PWM this time

When the time is there, I'll make an update post. Let me know what you think of the build and what I can do to make it even better.

BTW my peripherals are (I didn't put them in the build because they aren't part of the actual PC): - Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum (RGB) - Logitech G640 Gaming mousepad - Microsoft Wireless keyboard 3000 v2.0 (Logitech G710+ coming in the near future) - Logitech S715i 2.0 Speaker - HP 2309m Monitor (3ms)

Part Reviews

CPU

Abslolutely awesome CPU. I had a really hard time choosing between a locked I7 with hyperthreading and a unlocked I5 without hyperthreading. Also, I was on a pretty tight budget. This was the perfect solution: it has hyperthreading and boosts up to 3,9 Ghz. IMO it's just an I7 without the integrated graphics. If you don't need the extra GHz's and you're planning on buying a GPU, this is the one I'd recommend.

CPU Cooler

I wanted a CPU cooler on my Xeon because I thought the ugly Intel one would destroy my nice build. The first time I saw this H7, I fell in love with it. The black and white colour scheme fits perfectly in my build, it's very quiet and keeps the CPU cool enough for the price. 10/10 would recommend.

Motherboard

Since I'm an average PC user, I didn't need any of all those fancy motherboard features. This does the job perfectly and the black PCB is gorgeous. The reason I took this instead of a cheaper one (I don't really need the Z97 platform because I have a Xeon) is that it fitted very well with my black and white colour scheme. Also, I might be running SLI in the future, and this motherboard supports it.

Memory

Gorgeous looking RAM, fits very nice in a black and white colour scheme.

Storage

I had to choose between this 250GB SSD (80€) and a OCZ Trion 150 480GB SSD (120€). The trion holds a better value and would fit better with my black and white PC, but the overall performace let me down a bit. In the end I chose this one and I have no regrets. Stupidly fast for someone coming from a 60mbps HDD.

Case

Just like my CPU cooler, I fell in love the first time I saw the S340. White fitted my colour scheme, so I took that one. Cable management is really easy because of the PSU overlay, and for my use the 4 fan places is more than enough.

If I had to think of one thing I don't really like about the S340 it would be the material used for the black pieces. If you aren't carefull, a nail cratch will make a white line forever. This didn't happen to my case, but I've seen it elsewhere.

Power Supply

In my country (The Netherlands), this is the cheapest and one of the quietest PSU's that is fully modular. I took 620W for SLI to be optional in the future. The cables are all black, so no nasty colours interfere with my colour scheme. Otherwise, it's a PSU and it does it's job really well.

Operating System

Better than 8 and 7 IMO.

Case Fan

Nice looking fan from fractal design. My complaint is that is always runs at 1300 RPM, which is a bit too loud for me. I placed it in the front of my PC, so I won't hear it as much, but it's still a bit dissapointing because I opted for a very low noise PC.

Wasn't the 645 a custom Dell GPU? I don't actually know.

Me too lol

Yeah I think it is. I can only find it OEM on the internet, so only Dell used it probably for the Alienwares

I'm so sad... :( All of these peoples have money to build computers. I'm stuck with a 6 year old computer that gets 30 fps in CSGO on the lowest settings.

My old one was lucky to get 10 lol.

Don't worry, one day you'll have a new PC too. I worked for it some time and it's totally worth it!

I hope! My parents will probably be against it.. So maybe when I move out of the house. :D

Man you nailed this build! Part selection and colour scheme all on point! Once you get the new GPU in there, this will be one powerful build! Well done - seriously this is flawless in my opinion!

Thank you very much! I'm very hyped for pascal and it'll look a lot better when there's a proper GPU in there.

With the right bios update, I've heard people were able to bclk overlock their Xeons to 4Ghz.

  • 2 points

I own this cpu and it can be overclocked? I though xeons were not overclockable.

OT: good build, even if you can't overclock it that cpu is great for the price.

Thank you, I also don't want to take risks to make my CPU go 1 GHz faster, it already is a beast as it is.

That Zeon chip is a great Bang4Buck CPU, I used it in upgrading another build and it performs great with 4 cores and 8 threads. +1

Yeah, it's just an I7 without the integrated graphics for the price of an I5. Very nice CPU

If you want an all white gpu, look into a galax gtx Hall of Fame gpu. Not cheap, but they look hella sexy.

Yeah I've seen those, they look sick. When Pascal is around I'll take a look if there are any nice white GPU's

Hey man, just wanted to start off by saying what a slick build this is. I've been picking out parts for my own b/w build, and ended up with a very similar list. The thing is someone else was using the same cooler and said that it blocked the M.2 port on their mobo. Is it possible to check if the M.2 port is still available with that cooler on your mobo? Thanks a million.

  • 1 point

Well I'm guess you put the m.2 in first before the CPU cooler, I dont think many people remove there drives frequently

  • 1 point

The CPU cooler hangs a tiny bit over the M.2 slot (like 1mm), but I think you should have no problem installing a M.2 drive in there, even with the CPU cooler on. Maybe the GPU should be taken out for a sec, but that's easy to do.

In the 8th picture, you can get an idea of the amount of space between the CPU cooler and the GPU.

I've added some new parts and will be posting the updated build shortly. You might want to look for some newer parts like Skylake. It's better in the long run.

I mainly got this mobo because it looks so sick with the white and black. It's got a lot of nice features for the price!

At idle it is 25C, but with a benchmark like Aida64 I couldn't get it to run hotter than 50C, very strange. I'll measure today again with another benchmark. But if you want to know something about the cooler: it's very good for the price. Extremely quiet and very good performance. And of course it looks very awesome!
