This is an upgrade and rebuild of my main HTPC. I have a new and larger next gen SONY 4k TV coming and wanted to bring up the level of my HTPC. This is my most used PC. I use it for just about everything. Stream movies, surf web and light gaming.
I know, I am using a locked 8700 with a Z370i board. When I started getting parts for this, H and B series mother boards in ITX were hard to come by. Besides, you can do so much more with a Z series chipset. It will slightly overclock a locked processor if you choose and take full advantage of memory speeds. I got the locked 8700 because it has a 65 watt TDP and I thought it would be easier to cool. Yeah, right. who ever determined that this was a 65 watt chip was dropped on their head when they were young. It will go to 65 watts and then throttle. After I set the TDP to 110 watts, It ran like a beast but would try to go into thermal melt down mode, around 87c.
You need to understand that this pc sits inside an enclosed AV cabinet. Essentially a little box inside another box. Cooling this thing proved challenging. Originally, I had a silverstone NT06 pro cooler, but it was't having it. Temps would hit 98c almost immediately on a stress test run. I really like the FTZ01 case. It is well built and elegant in form. Matches well with my other AV components. Airflow and cooling are limited though. After confirming with PCpartpicker for compatibility, I decided to go with a Cryorig C1 cooler. Now in the past, even when I had serious doubts about components fitting, PCpartpicker has always proved me wrong. This time, someone forgot to tell Cryorig. At least in my case, this thing would not fit in any orientation. I bet I tried 20 times. Finally, I decided to hack out the PSU mount and move it up towards the front of the case by 1/4 inch. I installed new standoff for the mount and cut off the old ones. This did 2 things for me. One, gave me clearance for the cooler. Two, gave me more room to route cables. Speaking of cables, if you have ever used the cables that come with corsair SFX PSU's, they are stiff and hard to work with. I ordered the corsair SFX black braided cable set from corsair and these things are wonderful. Easy to bend and route. These are the cables that should come with these power supplies.
I had every intention to go with a 1080ti. When I went to frys to get one they had on sale, I found this gigabyte 2080 windforce on sale for $729. Thirty dollars cheaper than the 1080ti I was looking at. Decision made. This one has a slightly smaller cooler than the gaming edition and is a true 2 slot card. And it shows. This thing runs hot. Especially in my configuration.
On the C1, the original slim 140mm fan would recirculate hot air through the cooler. I decided to go with a full size 25mm thick fan instead. It was tight but it fit. I made a new top panel from a fixed weave carbon fiber panel. It is attached with magnetic tape. This way, I could cut out a fan opening directly centered on the fan. To help out the Gpu, I have 2 slim noctuas directly underneath the GPU as intakes and 2 60mm exhaust fans. I built this AV cabinet to hold this PC. It has 2 120mm exhaust fans behind the PC and 2 120mm intake fans on the shelf below. I have a 120mm passing intake air directly underneath the pc feeding the gpu. All cabinet fans are temp controlled. I added a led ring power button so I could see it through the tinted glass. I also added a pc remote system so I could turn it on and off and control video functions with my logitech remote.
Temps are amazing if sitting on a desk top. While in the cabinet, they are not to bad. CPU at idle is 33c. Under load, at 63c. Gpu at idle is 31c but underload, 73c. While under load, monitor and asus software shows cpu at 63 but my package temps are at 73c. This should be my last build for a while, so I hope you enjoy.
Oh yeah, I have never had a 1080ti but this RTX 2080 is pretty beastly. It is replacing a 1070. Yeah I know, overkill. ( Last pic is comparison to my custom bedroom HTPC. )
