EDIT After I added the additional RAM I ran a stress test on the computer w/ temps. I'm happy to report that CPU temp remains a breezy 30° Celsius resting, and ~60-80 with stress/extreme-stress. Thanks to everyone for all the help and input!
This is my first attempt in building my own PC. And I’ve learned a lot about the process. Don’t even get me started about the stupid things I did… lets just say, power cords are fickle.
Let me start off by saying I wanted a computer that could edit videos, photoshop, surf, and Game. One of the most important goals of this build was to not nessicarily make it future proof, but at least last more than a few years.
Three years ago on May 4th (may the Fourth be with you) I got married. My wife and I wanted to get a top-of-the-line computer with some of our wedding money. My wife and I argued up and down about buying a Mac or PC. Until I went all out and procured butt-tons of flow charts, pie charts, and professional opinions, to prove that a built PC was the way to go. In the end, “we” decided the logical choice was obvious… we bought a 2,500$+ iMac.
Something went wrong with the f**ker, so we took it into the store. The “Genius” called the three year old computer “vintage” and informed us they weren’t a loud to even take to it into the back to look at it. I ended up fixing it myself. After a few grueling hours searching the world wide web for some assistance, loads of tinkering hours, and a small fortune in replacement parts, the computer was finally fixed… mostly. It still kinda sucks.
Enough was enough! My goal is to build a better computer than the One that’s known to draw its mythical power from a poisonous white glowing apple, which is told to be fueled by simple folk’s hard earned coin. Armed with the thirst to prove my wife wrong, I departed on my PC building endeavors.
I was Joined by my trusty Asus Hero Vii mobo, who brought along his two blades which are enchanted with 4gs of mighty ram (Which will soon be blessed by a holy priestess who insures a 50% upgrade in future Quest), his loyal comrades Intel Of The i7’s, and the EnForcer of the 970’s joined our group shortly after departing. From Rendering hours of Epic Tails, to making little n00bians cry the sweet tears of defeat in 1on1 mortal combat, WE LOVE DEM SWEET TEARS!, we shall surely succeed!!!
CPU- Intel Core i7-4790K 4GHz. I was originally going to use an AMD, but my brother-n-law talked me into switching to an i5. When I was at the store they had an i7 combo deal with the mobo I wanted, so I picked it up instead. KAPOW! Upgrades!
MoBo- Asus MAXIMUS VII Hero. What can I say about this beautiful board? It’s reliable, looks nice, and will handle anything I need to throw at it. Holy Hymnals are played on hellborn Fender Stratocasters!
RAM- yeah, I didn’t really think there was any real difference between RAM. So I bought some red ones that had a decent speed of 2133 and called it a day. BAH RAM YOU F**KA!
Case- This guy took forever to pick out. I decided on the H440 because it pretty much nailed the criteria that I was looking for in a case: 1) rounded edges/rubber grommets made it easy to work with. 2) Windowed 3) Good Reviews 4) Excellent CM solving 5) Well vented 6) Priced well 7) Possessed by the power of Satan -and honestly it was the first case that I saw that I could picture working with, so I bought it. No regrets thus far. Needless to say it has been a journey of enlightenment… mostly for the wife. But the battle is never over! So if you have any comments or suggestions on how to make this setup full of even more awesomeness, then feel free to comment it up! If you think it sucks… THEN YOU SUCK! Kidding! everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just know that I’m praying you fall into a pit full of spikes with baby **** all over the place. There is NOTHING worse than pits full of baby ****. Trust me!
This guy seems to be running a little hot to me. When I have the duel monitors, watching Netflix on one screen while playing WoW on the other, the temp is about 160 °F. Any comments or insight on that would be appreciated. I couldn’t have done this build without the community and this website. So thank you all.
