Description

The 5.7L super compact Velka 5 pc case is the smallest form factor build I have accomplished so far. The case comes in three color options, black, gray and aluminum silver. I pick the silver is to match the chrome look for the charter's armor. When I received the case, I realized the case has undergone an anodized brushed and blasted treatment. It was not the same aluminum process from Lian-Li and the polishing process will be more extensive than the original plan. I purchased an Orbit Sander with various grits sandpaper range from 240 to 1000. I started off by hand sanding the cover piece with 120 grit sandpaper to remove the anodized layer. I spend about a total of 6 hours sanding from 240 grits to 1000 grits and ended with a single coating of Mother's aluminum polishing compound. The end result was acceptable but not outstanding. Maybe I have gone up the grit size to 2000, and wet sanding it. It may have the mirror finish.

The PC parts are recycled from my previous builds. besides the graphics card and case are newly purchased, all other parts are 3 years old.

I really wonder why more cases aren't offered in a bare metal version. Maybe a total mirror shine would require something like chrome plating, or a special type of aluminum, but that's a very thorough polishing job & it looks spiffy.

Durability, the anodized aluminum took me almost an hour with the 120 grit sandpaper to remove. the bare metal which lian li uses sometime in their case could get scuff up really quick and easily.

nah the mirror shine wouldn't have done it for me (yep i'm making it all about me lol and i don't like too much bling bling) IMO, the finish achieved is astoundingly, exquisitely, elegantly picturesque.....and not to forget with a pinch of a classically "vintage" FINISH!

6 hours of work paid-off nicely +1

How did I miss this build? Found it through the SFF forum thread - I love the finish, so cool! Still trying to get my hands on a Velka 5, intend on doing a custom wood faceplate for mine :D

So shiny! My Velka 3 gets delivered today, but unfortunately I won't be back in town to get it until Friday. Seeing this just makes me even more impatient. Congrats on the build!

Thank you! I am also thinking getting the Velka 3 for the next build. However, the PSU limitation and noise level now i am having second thoughts. Just wondering which PSU are you using for your Velka 3?

Currently I'm using an FSP 300W PSU, which stays quiet enough with my current APU-only build. However, I ordered the SFFTEC's ENP-7660B, which won't arrive until March or later. I'm not really in a hurry to get it, though, since I'm waiting to see if any new SFF video cards get released in the meantime.
