The Stig's Computer Cousin **Final Update**
by thefishkid1
Permalink:   (134 comments)
Description

They say, they both speak in binary.

I put it all together while waiting for the video card. It comes in tomorrow, I'll update with more pics then. I am planning to crossfire next month for those people who are hating on the power supply. I thought the Mobo would be more black than brown, but whatever. The Phanteks keep the CPU cooler than other builds I've used the H100, and its pretty much silent.

Update 1:I bought a bunch of white SATA cables and white individual wrapped 24-pin connector. Do you guys think it will look too white? Looking for a better way to manage that PWM cable from the Phantek.

Update 2: Installed the Video Card and benchmarked everything with stock clocks and voltage settings. OC'ed CPU to 4.4 ghz and GPU to 1100 Core and 1400 Memory clocks. Gained about 3000 marks in entry, 2000 in performance, and 1000 in extreme. Played some Crysis 3 at Max settings just turned AA down to 2x and played campaign at 40 FPS. I don't know if I will even need to crossfire. More pics inc.

Update 3: Installed most of the cables, other than CPU power cables were wrong. New ones ordered. White cathode lighting looks good, so does the White Bitfenix Recon controller.

Everything Done. No need to crossfire my fps don't drop below 60 in any games at 1080p (Except Crysis 3)

Any suggestions? Comments? Complaints?

Some say his CPU is OC'd to 12.8ghz... Some say he doesn't need an internet connection to play games online. All we know is he's (it's) called the Stig :) nice build

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 7 points 20 months ago

...but 6.8ghz isn't even breaking a world record (dear lord, that record is held by AMD)! He's gotta OC higher!

bgiunt4 5 points 20 months ago

eh? hahaha

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 30 points 20 months ago

-_- Good enough. How about 9001ghz? Even Vegeta would be amazed.

Casual_gamers_uniteUK 6 points 18 months ago

You would probably need a surplus star trek cold-fusion bomb to cool something like that. But the possibilities would be cool, Crysis 3 on a Pentium I, ahhh...

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 18 points 18 months ago

The problem with that is that the more you overclock, the more errors the processor makes. A Pentium I would make so many errors at that clock that there would probably be arrows flying out the back of your crossbow thats mounted to your inside out foot (and your nanosuit would be on the other side of the world).

Anthony21 [1 Build] 2 points 9 months ago

Word is that I've seen the world record from a Intel Celerion from Gen 2 to reach past 8.6Ghz.

miniclipgamer [2 Builds] 3 points 9 months ago

Such Ghz

Much amaze

Yes.

bgiunt4 11 points 19 months ago

This is one of the most beautiful builds I have ever seen. AWESOME JOB!!

saw1833 [1 Build] 9 points 20 months ago

Even if this build was utter crap (which it is not) the reference is worth a +1. Not 100% sure about that PSU though? Not familiar with the brand myself. Also how is that thermal paste working? I sell that stuff at work and figured since my store sold it that I shouldn't buy it. :P If it's good stuff, then I'll reconsider my thoughts on products at work.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 6 points 20 months ago

I love it actually, they were out of arctic ceramic which i normally use, but this stuff is amazing. Replaced arctic on my laptop's GPU's and temps went down about 5 degrees C. Yah, the PSU brand is a bit unknown, but it was perfectly packaged and, lets be real, I just got it because it was white/sexy.

IamApropos [3 Builds] 7 points 20 months ago

actually the PSU brand was purchased by OCZ to try and compete with the more reliable and better products on the market and to do so they have Seasonic making the guts of the Silencer MK III.

Look up PC Power and Cooler here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-oem-manufacturer,2913-8.html

and if you didn't know Seasonic is probably the most well known performance, quality PSUs on the market. You just have one with a different sticker ;)

Samalam 4 points 16 months ago

Actually not made by seasonic. It's made by Superflower. The 1200 watt version is made by seasonic.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/PC-Power-and-Cooling-Silencer-Mk-III-750-W-Power-Supply-Review/1722/12 Look near the bottom

IamApropos [3 Builds] 4 points 16 months ago

so Tomshardware, one of the most reputable websites on the internet got it wrong. Because they indicate the 1200 is SuperFlower and that all other MK III are Seasonic. I just double checked my references and you are in fact correct: http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page1418.htm

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 20 months ago

That explains why the mail-in-rebate comes from OCZ. Glad its not an OCZ PSU though.

SrgtMacfly [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

PC power and cooling is amazing

saw1833 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

all fair points

Fastmaster7 3 points 20 months ago

Rubens Barrichello haha. Great build

1Tactician1 3 points 20 months ago

How is that motherboard any issues? and how long have you had the computer?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Motherboard is great, better than I thought it would be with that many features for such a low price. The BIOS looks really nice, not as nice as MSI's. I actually use the ASRock Tuner Utility. No issues as of the first 3 days. But most motherboard issues are DOA.

bbooiigg [1 Build] 2 points 20 months ago

The psu is a seasonic one. Nice choice. All quality parts, I seriously can't think of anything to change. Have fun with this beast, especially when you crossfire the 7950!

sigmafunk 2 points 18 months ago

Wow, sweet rig ! I love the color !!!

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 18 months ago

THANKS!

jakethemp [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

love how ya kinda went all white with it.. sexy build

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Thanks, I wanted to go with a EVGA GTX 680, to match to color scheme, but I am not going to pay $100 more dollars for a 7% performance boost. I'm looking at making a custom GPU shroud.

greedboy 3 points 20 months ago

You coulda gone with an i5 3570k which would save you around $100, although its a about %10 cpu performance worse than the i7 3770k, so it really wouldn't be worth it unless you want the color matching and the 7% increase in graphics processing.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

I was thinking about just going 3570k, but i really wana play Crysis 3. Tom's Hardware said that the 3770k can really boost performance. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crysis-3-performance-benchmark-gaming,3451.html

jakethemp [2 Builds] 3 points 20 months ago

arctic cooling makes some pretty kick ass gpu coolers. black and white. i had the accelero extreme. 3 92mm fans and kept the gpu about 20 deg cooler then the stock shroud on the old 6870 2gb i used to have

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Yah, that's what i was thinking about going with. I heard the thermal adhesive for the VRM heatsinks sucks though. Did you use a different type?

jakethemp [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

yeah it majorly blows i heard themal tape works best i used the adheasive becuase some people had success. i was not that person. lol i mixed it very throughly and it still didnt hold... def get the thermal tape.. other than that the cooler really cooled things down... the downside tho was this cooler is HUGE

Kevdo [3 Builds] 2 points 20 months ago

They came out with a Mac version of the 7950 that also works on PC, but it's $480.

Not worth the money in my opinion, but thought I'd point it out since it would compliment your color scheme very nicely.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 3 points 20 months ago

I emailed Sapphire to see if i can buy just the cooler. God knows what they'll say.

Bgwood91 2 points 19 months ago

Did they get back to you? I'm looking at making a white/blue themed build, and don't want to have to paint my GPU lol

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 19 months ago

Yes, they got back to me. They said the do not sell they cooling unit alone. I painted my cooling shroud, while my Accelero cooler came it. I was thinking about buying a powercolor card that had a reference cooler, easier to paint that huge shroud as long as you mask everything off.

Javanode [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

sexy build! especially the case

[comment deleted]

Stigs 1 point 20 months ago

Nice Build... The 7950 will run your games very well. Awesome CPU cooler too!

Divdor [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Love the all white / black theme. Should destroy games for a long time. Good Build!

xBlood_Monkey [9 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Beautiful rig! How is that case for cable management? I want to try my hand at a B&W build this summer and was thinking of using this case.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

The case is amazing for able management, comes with plenty of zip ties and even stick on holders to tie cables to. The tooless drives seem a bit flimsy but they work great.

xBlood_Monkey [9 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Awesome! It came down to this case and the Fractal Design Define R4, but that one is 50% more expensive, and it'd really help to put that money into something else. :)

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

Yah, it was either this case or the white Storm Stryker. That case was a bit too busy for the cleaner look i was going for, but had much better airflow. This case is more designed for watercooling.

duramax08 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

It looks so clean, it looks empty! Very nice though. Just curious, wheres the hard drive? I dont see it in the picture.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

The ssd is in the tooless tray to the left of the front case fan. It's super thin.

skyfox64 [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Very nice build. Very comparable to my current build in the works. For a time, I was even looking at that case.

yoni88 1 point 20 months ago

why is psu facing up isn't there a fan filter at bottom

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 20 months ago

PC Power & Cooling is smart. I flipped it upside down, and on the opposite side, the writing is upside down. Which makes it look write side up when you flip it. I explained it terribly, but in the pics you can see i flipped it and the words are the correct way. +1 for thermals +1 for OCD-ness.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 20 months ago

There is, but then the writing would be upside-down and i would die a little inside every time I would look at it.

Joe_Cool99 1 point 20 months ago

Dat Top Gear reference. Great build, too :P

[comment deleted]

TheVanguard [1 Build] 1 point 20 months ago

Nice! I have the same CPU cooler..very quiet!

okan_ 1 point 19 months ago

did you paint the gpu white to match or is the lighting playing a trick on my eyes?

in any case, it looks really good.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 19 months ago

I did paint it. But it's really not that good of a cooler. Maybe better than reference, but still too loud. I bought an accelero extreme that comes in Tuesday.

candy [2 Builds] 1 point 19 months ago

I really like the look of the Bitfenix Recon in the White Shinobi case :P

luisgerry57 1 point 19 months ago

Nice build. So clean inside, good solid items, a lot of people are like what is that PSU but hey it works and if you are happy.

Where did you get your cables?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 19 months ago

frozencpu they are awesome. Great customer support. I used all bitfenix alchemy cables.

pixel_ 1 point 19 months ago

Looks amazing!

[comment deleted]

BiCKiN 1 point 18 months ago

Did you sleeve the cables yourself or did you buy them separate?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 18 months ago

Bgwood91 1 point 18 months ago

So I thought I will inform you that I may be "stealing" your idea of a Stig based build, I seen this a month ago and loved the white theme. "The Stig" didn't mean anything to me at the time, but I have recently fallen in love with Top Gear (U.K.) and thought a matte white build would look absolutely amazing. Then I remembered this and just should I would let you know. I hope you don't mind me copying your theme.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 17 months ago

No way! There needs to be moar stigs in the wild.

Bgwood91 1 point 17 months ago

Excellent, I'm happy you feel this way. It will be very custom. I'm planning to use either a NZXT Switch 810 or if I can get one, the new Nanoxia Deep Silence 6. It will be powder coated white, with pastel white coolant, painted fans and radiators. The whole nine. It will be a while before I can do it though (broke ass student FTW).

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 17 months ago

You're telling me, i just graduated, student loans FTL. wut evs...

SilentGalaxy 1 point 18 months ago

What did you use to lit up the case? Thanks

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 3 points 17 months ago

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2993/lit-24/Dual_12_Cold_Cathode_Kit_--_White.html

i used one bar at the top and one bar at the bottom. I painted the controller white to blend in. The controller has a sound sensor if you're into that. I am not.

Ventrus [1 Build] 1 point 17 months ago

I use this build as a demostration for color coordination. Simple yet Gorgeous.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 0 points 17 months ago

Thanks!

Hobbes1995 1 point 17 months ago

I love everything but the case! Seriously one of the nicest I've seen! Did the display thing on the front come with the case or did you buy it separately?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 0 points 17 months ago

No, I had to buy the fan controller separately. They are both Bitfenix so they have the same soft touch texture, which is amazing.

OCedPug [2 Builds] 1 point 16 months ago

That Sniper is in deep cover , You got a Pro sniper mate :) Great build BTW , loved it , its way better than mines :(

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 16 months ago

Thanks@!

CannedBullets [1 Build] 1 point 16 months ago

Nice, I love the color scheme also. Good job with the cable management.

iAmNicklezz 1 point 16 months ago

This is reaally sexy. +1

Arrowdodger 1 point 16 months ago

Your GPU Temp. at full load is getting kinda close to the max. you would want. Ever thinking about installing another fan set-up or liquid cooler to try to cool it down more? And, unfortunately, did/do you know that the LGA1155 is going to be phased out here soon? How does the SSD work for you? Is it all it's churched up to be? Because I was thinking of putting a 256GB Samsung SSD in, and just wondering if its worth the extra money. Other then that cool design and airflow technique you have inside your case.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

I changed out the stock cooler for an Arctic Accelero Cooler.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186064

It doesn't get over 45C after gaming for hours.

The SSD is the truth. I had the second generation Samsung SSD and it wasn't quite as fast as I had hoped, but this one is amazing. Just as fast today as when i first installed OS. 12 Seconds to do a restart.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

how is the new cooler running for you? cause im going to be doing a liquid push-pull configuration and i wanted to keep it somewhere around 70C after hard gaming So the SSD is truly worth the extra bit of money then?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

The cooler is amazing. It is pretty much silent and while stress testing the temps never got over 65C. My case is in a cubby which kills airflow and its the AZ summer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/thefishkid/GPU_zps964b4c5c.png

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

you should definitely find a better place for airflow to occur or you might end up burning your system out soon

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

Yah, its a dumb built in desk in my apartment. I just bought a house so the computer will have its own room. The temps hover around 55C while gaming so it doesn't get that hot anyway.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

but too long running at 55c and it might become a problem........i would suggest immediate temporary ventilation enhancements or relocation to a more ventilated space

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

55C is actually a pretty low temp, especially while gaming.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7950-review-benchmark,3207-10.html Shows that in a test environment, 55C is the average gaming temp.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

yes, for a "perfect environment" for real world testing, (hot environment summer months) temperature of 55c normal would be about 10c warmer then normal. even at 55c it still does more "identifying" damage then in lower temps

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

I wouldn't build a system without an SSD at this point. I have two 2TB drives for storage and my 128GB which has my OS and Photoshop and a couple games. Super Fast.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

would you recommend an "all ssd" system then?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

It would be expensive, but if you are just gaming and not torrenting terabytes of data, an all SSD system would be nice. If you go that route, i would recommend getting a 512gb SSD though. You'd be surprised how quickly 128gb fills up with just Windows, essential programs, and a couple games.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

hmmm.......thanks for the input. but ive decided on a 128gb ssd and a 3tb hdd should suit gaming needs efficiently, correct?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

Yah, that's really nice set up. As long as your system and essential programs are on the SSD, your system will zip along. You won't even notice much of a difference between your setup and an all SSD setup.

Arrowdodger 1 point 15 months ago

except all ssd set-up.......everything will more at the same speed instead of the possible lagger connection of an hdd

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

I changed out the stock cooler for an Arctic Accelero Cooler.

YAY!! I am the 100 point, what is my prize.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

A solid fist bump

OfficerRaymond 1 point 15 months ago

This is one of the sexiest builds I have seen on this site... You get my +1. Is it still running like a champ?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

Still running great. I am looking for another MSI card though, just for fun. No game i play really stutters or anything, but why not go overboard? But then i tease about a matching watercooled setup and my imagination starts writing checks, my banks account can't cash.

OfficerRaymond 1 point 15 months ago

I think it happens to the best of us... lol. "My budget is 1,000..." "OOH, the GTX 770 is on sale... Maybe 1,200..." "Gotta have a custom cooler for my i5... This is a high end build after all... maybe 1,300, and that's it" "This is on sale, that is on sale... F*** it, going balls out"

I absolutely love computer gaming, but I hate what computer gaming does to my wallet.

anilms 1 point 15 months ago

Its really beautiful. The white cables and the white cooler.

Djhidden5 [1 Build] 1 point 15 months ago

you should bitcoin mine with this

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

I did for a while. The ASIC machines have made it a ridiculous affair. Difficulty went through the roof and made it to where it took ten weeks for 1 bitcoin.

TechTeam911 [5 Builds] 1 point 15 months ago

CD drive?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 14 months ago

I bought an internal CD/DVD burner and a usb-to-Sata cable and keep the whole setup in my desk. If i need it, i just plug it in, but I rarely use it. I didn't want to have that ugly CD drive messing up the clean looks of my case.

SangeetKhatri [1 Build] 1 point 12 months ago

Seriously a fantastic build. Good parts selection. Good cable management. Good everything. Seriously, this is one of the best builds I have seen.

Take A Bow Master!!

brelovix 1 point 11 months ago

Personally for your CPU cooler I would get a Noctua NH-D14, it is very good quality and highly trusted for performance based cooling. I would also consider getting the newer gen i7 instead of that older one picked. Other than that I'd say everything is fine.

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 2 points 11 months ago

Yah, this build is from a year ago when that was a current gen CPU. The Phanteks cooler is actually better than the Noctua and doesn't come in Hearing Aid Beige.

Askor500 1 point 11 months ago

the video card you listed isn't in stock everywhere i look, would the MSI AMD Radeon HD 7950 OC Boost 3GB GDDR5 DVI/HDMI 2-Mini DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card be compatable?

thefishkid1 [Submitter] [2 Builds] 1 point 11 months ago

Compatible with what? If you want to match them up for CrossFire, you probably could but i wouldn't recommend it. Most of the time, you want to buy GPUs that are from, not only the exact same company/model/board, but also the same chip batch/bin from manufacturer. If you just want to know if it will be compatible with the other parts in the build, it will be 100% compatible.

RedstoneOpenDoor 1 point 11 months ago

This is so awesome, a huge thumbs up!

Valdore [1 Build] 1 point 11 months ago

Sir, your build inspired me to do this: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/b/JDM

Top Gear reference, +1 for that alone.

So clean! Fantastic build. :)

EPICGUY23 1 point 8 months ago

Some say, his build is sexy. All we know, he's called thefishkid1! (and its true)

milesknight [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

I think another video card would look good. :)

Erolian 1 point 7 months ago

Damn thats clean!!!

Ac3TEK 1 point 6 months ago

+2 for relating to the Stig ... Some say that he secretly has 8 monitors that surround him, and that he also secretly uses a 5 way graphics card. All we know is, he's not the Stig, but the Stig's Computerized cousin!

silvers4sarefaster [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Love that you called it the Stig hehe, although check out mine, it's got a turbo! lol

antoniojack 1 point 5 months ago

cdk222216 1 point 3 months ago

First thing I noticed is that cable management is amazing, very VERY clean build. Thats something to be proud of nice job.

Spyderskill 1 point 3 months ago

What is that thing called in the front of the tower? The display / monitor / thing.. Lol idk what it's called!

It's a fan controller. Specifically BitFenix Recon (white)

Hey thanks for replying! Yeah I had done a bit of high tech research, (googling) and found out what it was. I basically copied what you've build, I couldn't find the motherboard anywhere except eBay and ended up getting one that had a lot of red on it. I really like your set up, especially the color combos! Looks so cool!

How is the Phanteks PH-TC14PE_BK performing? Is it quiet?

Thanks!

It's my favorite part of the build. Extremely quiet. Moves a ton of air and keeps my overclocked CPU under 40C during heavy gaming. I have a custom fan profile I set up using the Recon Controller, where the fan is pretty much running at 75% to 100% fan speed at all times. You can barely tell the fan is on.

How is that motherboard any issues? and how long have you had the computer?
