Holiday 2013 Value Build

Description

SSD, 1TB Hard Drive, and Case were cheap/free courtesy of my job. Everything else was purchased online around Black Friday and Cyber Monday from various sources including Newegg, NCIX, SuperBiiz, and eBay for the prices listed. My Noctua cooler still hasn't arrived but I'll update this when it does show up. I sold my previous computer (Dell XPS i7 Laptop) for $550 and used those funds to purchase this computer.

This machine is used for a wide variety of tasks including web design, application development, video and image editing & production, occasional gaming, virtualization, and much more. I don't believe any better of a computer could be purchased at this price point.

SiSoftware Official Live Rank: http://goo.gl/8iPffH

Future upgrades (in order of importance) include: - Sound Card (thinking about going with an external solution like the JDS O2+ODAC) - Upgraded case fans, likely Noctua for performance and noise reduction - Second 840 EVO for raid 0 - Another 8GB+ of RAM

I will pay you a full $10 for you to grab me a ssd! That's a $5 profit

KevinP 2 points 4 months ago

that is an entire new SSD for him

deathfromup [3 Builds] 3 points 4 months ago

What job do you have that got you those sick prices on storage and case.

You could look into some Air Penatrators from Silverstone. They make great fans apparently and I ordered some when they had a sale on them. Check them out at frozencpu.com, they move a ton of air as well and from what I can tell are pretty quiet

Also there is a set of headphones reviewed on techoftomorrow that come with an external sound card but I'm sure they are pricey, not sure how much you're looking to spend on that

You build looks great and obviously for the price is awesome, +1 my friend, +1

If you haven't already, check out this video on fans: http://youtu.be/9uUXt7mE6Qg?t=4m26s

As for the audio I don't have a budget to allow for it yet, but I'm planning on purchasing the JDS AMP+DAC combo. It has an open-source design and is praised among audiophiles as the best sound quality you can get in the consumer space. As for headphones I recommend Sony MDR-7506, in my experience you can't get better quality (and value) than these without paying $400+ on orthodynamic headphones.

Oh ya I had definitely seen that video haha

I personally own Corsair SP120s

Oldking [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

+1

Why such fast RAM? It seems a bit fast for what the rest of your build is. Then again, at the price, why not? Just wondering.

I planned on spending about $60 for my memory so for an extra $5 I got a significant boost in clock speed and overall build quality. I only have it running at 2133 right now because I'm waiting for my Noctua to arrive before I get into any in-depth tweaking/oc'ing.

Awesome computer for the price! I bet it runs amazing. I would have gone with a bit of a better graphics card, but the one you have was priced low and you said you only do occasional gaming.

go4the1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

It's way more than enough for what I do. I originally planned on getting a 7770 but then the 7790 went on sale for cheaper than a 7770 and it was a no-brainer. Thanks!

xx116xx [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Sounds good enough!

+1 for cpu and mobo :)

fsma92 [8 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

could you explain how sisoftware works and if it's free?

Apach3 [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

all my WAT. just take it, and i won't take 'no' for an answer! seriously, you have no idea how lucky you are to have an employer who'd sell you a hard drive, an SSD, and a case for $30

best $500 system ever!

lamb_llama [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

ok just one question... HOW DID YOU GET 10.0c IDLE lol. you must live in really cold house...

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

AMD temperature sensors are inaccurate at idle

go4the1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

19c ambient temp. with the stock amd cooler in the pics, since apparently the noctua I purchased on Amazon wasn't actually in stock.

Amazing value. I would think the only thing that would get you more for the price would be scrapping the cooler for an FX-8350 upgrade. Unless the overclocking really gets you that much more performance. However that cooler does get you manly-points for its cfm.

go4the1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

The stock amd cooler is WAAAAY too loud, my computer would be essentially silent if not for that little thing trying to spin at 4000 rpm. I'm not really concerned with overclocking it but I don't doubt that I'd be able to achieve the same performance as a stock 8350 at less than half the noise level.

MAXXHEW [2 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I'm using the same RAM as you in my build... I am looking to add 8 more GB. When/where in the hell did you find them for that price? You got a super good deal on them!

go4the1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

DrunkenAlchemist 1 point 4 months ago

Wow, such savings.

go4the1 [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

I don't really care to dig up every receipt but here's the ssd. http://puu.sh/5JdF5.jpg I obtained many certificates for free as employee accommodations.

18hockey [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

O_O

wow, you are one lucky guy. I'd be buying the entire store if I were you.

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 0 points 4 months ago

I don't think he or anybody else particularly cares if you believe him. Or at least it doesn't change anybody's day that you don't believe him.

18hockey [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

ok, that's great for you.
