Description

UPDATE 1/24/14

I have posted up the V2 of Project Phenom here - http://pcpartpicker.com/b/Lu8. Go ahead and check out the updated rig.

From those of you who have seen my last build, (http://pcpartpicker.com/b/DTn), this is my second build. This is much more powerful, smarter, and customized in a slightly bigger case.

Few interesting features:

  1. Everything is linked together with Corsair link. (For those of you who are unaware of what it is, it detects almost every component in your build, and lets you control most of them, while showcasing the temps.) This is provided by the Corsair AX760i PSU + H100i)

  2. I have remote controlled lighting installed.

  3. LCD Touch screen fan controller.

  4. Multi SD card slot, with front red LED strip control scroll switch.

  5. Sound dampening foam installed where ever possible.

  6. Custom side window on Corsair 300R.

  7. Custom laser etched name + signature.

  8. Custom designed braided cables.

11/25/13 UPDATE:

Love how you decided to put as many Noctuas in as could be hidden from view - I did the same thing. And great job on weaving those LEDs around the frames! I wish Noctua would release their Redux fans already.

Also, those massive triple-slot DCU2's make the case look tiny :D

And those cat pictures...I imagine he speaks in a deep, heavy Spanish accent. You have one of the most badass looking cats I've ever seen.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 9 points 5 months ago

Haha thanks.

Noctuas, unfortunately are ugly. So yeah got dual 140's in front. GPU's are massive. Probably one of the top 7970's out there.

As for the cat, it's my friend's. And yeah, it's awesome.

OCedPug [2 Builds] 8 points 5 months ago

Watch out , that cat might be a popular meme someday :P

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 8 points 5 months ago

It's giving me pretty strong "I don't always X, but when I do, I Y" vibes. Especially in that shot where it's lying sideways.

Zeus [1 Build] 8 points 5 months ago

+1 for cat.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Thanks

nice build btw

Apach3 [1 Build] 2 points 5 months ago

you took the words right off my keyboard :P

SethMatrix 7 points 5 months ago

Named Project Phenom. Gets i7 lol. Great build though +1 Have you overclocked the gpus yet?/will you? Wow. I thought that case was the 350d/550d then i saw what it really was! Nice pimping it out with the accessories btw.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 4 months ago

haha I would see why people would think it's an AMD build. I never thought of it that way :?

Yes soon as I get some free time from work/class, I will be OC'ing the CPU and GPU's and then posting benchmark results. Stay tuned.

dschutt84 [3 Builds] 6 points 5 months ago

At least someone understands that you don't need a 1000 watt PSU to power this!!! Sick of seeing people with 850+ with a single gpu and paired with a SSD and HDD.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Exactly ;D

Xaftz [1 Build] 4 points 5 months ago

Wow... This is one of the best and most elaborate builds I've seen yet. The pictures really helped.

This thing dwarfs anything I'll ever be able to afford in terms of parts, customization, and coordination.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Thanks!

As for the price, yeah ;(. I wish I hadn't spent so much, but the way I look at it, not only is it worth it, but I bought all the components at an epic price ;)

Planning is key, down to the last inch. I had to modify this case in several ways to accommodate everything. (drilling included)

LukePRTR 4 points 5 months ago

+1 For The Cat!!! And also this amazing build!

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 4 points 5 months ago

Very beautiful, +1 and many more if I could. Always loved the 300R

Where did you get the window done? or did you do this yourself? Same question on the cables

Do you have a link for your lighting/remote kit? I have the phoybia lighting kit so I just wanted to compare

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

If you have questions regarding custom cables/window, PM me and I can tell you there.

As for the lighting kit, I got it off ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5M-5050-RGB-SMD-LED-Waterproof-Flexible-Strip-300-LEDs-44-Key-IR-Remote-/180992529478

Pretty cheap and works well

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks for the link on the lighting kit, I'm going to actually order one now just to have it as it's awesome and I will hold onto it for a future build haha

Painwithin [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

I got the 300R Windowed version but the holes for the fans "in the window" kinda bug me though i am using one atm for a 140mm fan lol but i'd rather a plain plexy glass window, was yours the windowed version? i'd like to change my window if its remotely possible.

How did you light it? Around the inside of the glass panel? I plan to get this case for my build, but I'm lost on how I would put the LEDs in

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Yes around the glass panel, and in a way that it is not visible

thunderdan602 [1 Build] 2 points 4 months ago

Beautiful build. How do you like that motherboard in the overclocking department?

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Completely hate the UD4H. **** motherboard, quite frankly. Failed on me twice. Basically bios failed twice while trying to do minor overclocking (correctly, I may add). That is why I have gotten a new mobo and changed a lot of stuff. Will be updating with new build if you want to keep a look out in the next week or 2.

thunderdan602 [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

Thank you for letting us know. I was seriously considering this motherboard for my upcoming build.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 3 months ago

Motherboard looks great, but literally simple overclocking kills it. Absolutely terrible. Unless I somehow got a bad batch, twice several weeks apart, makes it very unlikely.

Stanbery 2 points 4 months ago

You're friend's cat has swagger, so +1. As much as I love my cat, his fur stays the hell away from my computers. lol

Matty [1 Build] 2 points 3 months ago

Hi, amazing build with the dual 7970's and the great cabling. i just want to know if the 300r, ud4h and h100i all fit fine without any modding to the case. obviously it worked really well in your build, but i just want to know if you had to mod the case at all. thanks matt

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 3 months ago

You will have to do minor modding on top of the case. Basically make your own holes, which takes no more than 10 minutes. You don't even need a drill, just some pliers. UD4H specifically don't fit without modding due to the large heatsink on the board. Also it is a terrible motherboard, It failed on me twice so I got it replaced with a different one.

Matty [1 Build] 1 point 3 months ago

Hi, thanks for the reply. I think i will use the ROG Hero mobo, seems a very good quality and solid mobo. Hoping to build in March. Matt

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 3 months ago

I wish I could have used that mobo, but a little expensive for me. The asrock is a great board, with more functionality than some of these higher end mobo's. Appeal isn't that great, but functionality is what ultimately matters.

Fun fact, this mobo has a dehumidifier, 2 usb 3.0 headers, 1 usb 3.0 port directly on the mobo. It is coated with water resisting material. + a lot more.

TheMohammadmo [2 Builds] 2 points 3 months ago

Upvote just for the cat.

CheyTac [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Ive heard that two 7970's decreases in performance from one 7970? Correct me if im wrong.

Zeus [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

There are a lot more issues with xfire 7970s compared to a single 7970. Raw potential performance wise, no.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

I've heard that with tri crossfire, not dual.

If you go and search crossfire 7970 benchmarks, you see significant FPS increases in various high end games. Dual GPU's also help with higher resolutions. I am pushing 3x 1080p monitors. In the future, if I ever decide to upgrade to 1440p, dual GPU's help tremendously.

Here is just one of the articles with several benchmarks. - http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_radeon_hd_7970_crossfire_review,19.html

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

5760x1080 is higher resolution than 2560x1440 ;) Unless you mean 7680x1440...and that's just insane O_O

For the most part it's usually quadfire/quad-SLI that has negative gains. Triple cards just has much lower scaling compared to two.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

I meant 7680x1440. I will never be going down from tri screens ;D, and it would be strange if I only upgraded only 1 of my monitors to 1440p.

And yeah, I meant tri/quad in above comment. This is my first time doing dual crossfire, so I will see when I actually do several benchmarks with GPU Cinebench and 3D Mark 11.

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

7680x1440...yikes, that's a wallet's nightmare! In my wildest dreams I'd go 7680x1600 so it wouldn't be so narrow though :P

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Actually 1440p monitors are becoming cheaper and cheaper as 4K TV's are coming down in price.

Speaking of which, Seiki is selling 39" 4K TV's for $520 and 55" TV's for $850 this Black friday. (Only 55" has massive price drop, whereas it seems they sell the 39" TV's at cheap prices year round)

Kbur215 2 points 5 months ago

I'm throwing this out there. Those Seiki Tv's don't have a DVI input so you are stuck using an HDMI, which only supports 30HZ frequency.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I wasn't actually considering them. I was just pointing out that 1440p monitors are now becoming very affordable due to the release of cheap 4k TV's

Kbur215 1 point 4 months ago

I hear you. It makes me wonder why they don't have DVI port over the VGA port on Seiki Tv's. However, I know what you mean with regards to the drop in 1440p monitors. The price drop on them in the last 6 months is rather impressive.

I personally have a 5760x1080 setup and not quite interest in moving up. Based on what it takes to go to 7680x1440, in terms of raw graphics card power its just not worth it at this point in time. I figure you, to play on max settings you need at least 2x top of line cards if not 3x. So the price for 2x or 3x cards is one thing, but then you need to factor in a motherboard that isn't going bottle-neck the cards combined with a high end processor probably with LGA 2011 socket. I digress, The price just starts to skyrocket at that point when moving to 7680x1440.

LeMonarque [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Be really careful about high res TV's instead of monitors for the reason Kbur215 said! And I'm talking more about the GPU horsepower needed for that setup, not the actual monitors themselves. 3x1440p is higher resolution than a single 4K screen! It's a massive GPU tax...in more ways than one haha

PickItApart 1 point 5 months ago

Watch out for ***** hair in the fans.

ImElkay [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

How are those two Sennheiser headphones compared to each other? It's to bad you can't fit a sound card in the rig (at least it doesn't look like you can) to make the cans sound even better. Also, are those fans the 140mm equivalent of the NF F12's?

One more thing, are those video cards triple slot?

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

I have a pretty awesome amp, so no need for sound card. As for the Noctuas, yes the NF F12's are pretty similar. The biggest difference is the shape of both ;P

Yes, each GPU is triple slot.

ImElkay [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

Ok I gotcha. What amp is it? To bad no surround sound though.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Dunno exact name, it's by NuForce though. Got it from Best buy Magnolia.

RLD123 1 point 4 months ago

what amp do you use?

I don't know exactly which model, I think it is uDac Nuforce.

what is each fan doing? Front two as intake Back and top as exhaust? Also did you fully remove the H100i fans or did you just add the corsair air series on the otherside of the rad?

Front two intake, top and rear exhaust. I replaced the stock fans with air series completely.

How did you get that H100i cooling system in? Did you have any trouble?'

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 2 points 3 months ago

Depending on what motherboard you use. If it has a large heatsink, you will have to do minor modding on top of the case. Basically make your own holes, which takes no more than 10 minutes. You don't even need a drill, just some pliers. I wouldn't suggest UD4H, terrible motherboard. Got it replaced twice then just got a different board entirely.

OCedPug [2 Builds] 0 points 4 months ago

I think you spent a tad bit on the wires though , they could have went cheaper. But thats just a poor guy's opinion. IDK how I'd have used that much of money. Perhaps in some bitcoins ? That brings me to this question , is that 7970 CF good for mining ? How many MH/S it gives ( that is if your mining ) Although I know ASIC devices exists , the're useless for anything else , wheares GPUs can even game and edit , etc.

StaRn3ss [Submitter] [3 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Trust me, the price on these custom braided cables is really cheap. What other people offer is 2-3x more.

As for CF 7970's, yes it would be pretty decent for mining, problem is, you have a really high chance of burning out your GPU. Asic devices are much better for mining. And I understand your point, having a GPU to do multiple things, problem is, it's no way near as efficient at mining as ASIC devices. AT. ALL. Asic GPU's are being sold as well. I did some research on this, and my friend actually mines, GPU's are just not viable options.

OCedPug [2 Builds] -1 points 4 months ago

How it went cheaper ? I got a NZXT sleeved kit for 18$. second GPU would need 7-8$wires at best.

I doubt mining can "burn"GPUs. I'hv seen people mining wit dual REFERENCE 7970s for like 15 hrs a day. I have built one such system too. Efficiency might be a reason , but arent some ASIC devices consuming almost same power as of GPUs ? Also like I said before , GPUs are multipurpose. I plan on doing some editing and thus would prefer a GPU anyday. ASICs offer higher performances , but in remote countries including India where I live , its tough to get stuff like these and it comes in group buys which sucks + RMA issues. ASIC GPUs ? The're more expensive than the computer the're most likely to be a part of , although the're good.
