1440p Corsair 350D / ASUS ROG Gaming Machine, Fall 2013

Description

My third build this year, I am now fully addicted. I've done ATX, MITX, and now decided to try MATX. My last two machines were in Fractal Design cases, but this time the Define Mini R2 lost out to the Corsair 350D, as I want to add a second video card down the road, and the Mini couldn't do it as easily with the H100i installed.

I ordered all the parts on November 1st from NCIX in Vancouver. Paid for next business day expedited shipping to Saskatoon. UPS then lost my shipment, sent my components to Seattle, Louisville, Minneapolis, and Winnipeg before finally reaching me 10 days later. I built the machine this afternoon, and have just set it up on my desk.

I only have a crappy camera phone, and so the photos are what they are. Sorry about that.

I LOVED building this. It went together quickly and cleanly, and there's good space behind the motherboard tray for cable management. I'm ordering some sleeved cables, so I've only twist-tied what I needed to for now. Before the end of the year, I hope to add another 780 and the cables.

I used Asus Suite III's auto overclocking feature, which landed my at 4.6 GHz. I also followed the recommended ASUS speeds for the video card - 1100 clock and 6600 memory. I haven't touched anything other than that.

3dmark Firestrike score of just over 9500, as you can see at: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/1610212

Umm, not much to say - it's exactly what I want out of a gaming machine. It's fast, quiet, and doesn't take up a ton of room.

For cooling, I have 2x140mm on the front as intake, 1x120mm on the rear as exhaust, and 2x120mm SP fans as pull on the top-mounted radiator, bringing cool air into the case. So far everything seems to stay nice and cool - CPU topping at 65C, GPU at 70C.

1440p gaming is ridiculously smooth - I mostly play MMO's, and the monitor clocks up to 110MHz, and WoW and GW2 are like buttah! Will try out some FPS's later this week.

Anyone have any suggestions on how this build might crack 10k on 3dmark's Firestrike? Or what my next OC steps are?

EDIT: Fixed video card sag - good spot by a Redditor. New photos added for proof!

EDIT 11/13/13 Starting to add some games and checking framerates. All at 2560x1440 60Hz unless noted:

Update 11/17/13: Added non-potato photos. Light's stuck on the H100i, so RMA'ing to Corsair. Took photos before putting stock cooler shudder in.)

3dmark FireStrike with Stock Cooler and Stock Video Card setup: ~8500

UPDATE 12/19/13:

Replaced the H100i with a new one (Thanks Corsair!), and re-tuned the Fan Profiles. Now running push exhaust on the H100i with the rear AF120 as intake. System can run dead quiet at full load, max CPU temp is about 70C, same with GPU.. So 5 degrees more on the CPU @ 4.6 GHz, but no fan noise at all. I'm okay with that :)

Gotta love cheap 1440p monitors.

Grazzert [2 Builds] 4 points 5 months ago

i absolutely love mine. only thing needed is a better stand, which is solved pretty easily/cheaply.

SanjayP 1 point 7 days ago

Does that monitor have a VESA mount?

Grazzert [2 Builds] 1 point 6 days ago

it surely does. make sure you get a stand that can support a large screen though. the first one i got had to be returned because the monitor was too heavy for it to support the weight.

SanjayP 1 point 4 days ago

Alright Thanks!

istealunderwear [5 Builds] 4 points 5 months ago

Nice, Doing a Corsair 350d build aswell, hopefully later this week.

looks awesome bro.

onekoolguy 2 points 5 months ago

nice

TelFiRE [1 Build] 2 points 5 months ago

sick sick man! This is similar to my build which is on its way... I got a 1080 but I deeply regret it, luckily I have ShopRunner and Iron Egg so most likely will just return it and get a 1440 instead.

How are your blacks with that monitor? Only complaint I heard about PLS was the blacks aren't dark like with IPS.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Blacks are great - there's SLIGHT bleed around the edge, but compared to the $1000 Apple 27" on my other desk, the matte screen and the $700 price cut make up for any slight greying. It's awesome for games, esp at 96 or 110 MHz.

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

96 or 110 mhz? Wut?

TelFiRE [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

They are 60Hz but overclockable :)

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Yeah, the QNIX 2710's will overclock.. lots will do 120Hz, but mine only does 110..

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Was confused because you said mhz.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Oh, sorry. Tired as hell. 110 Hz. yawn

Graestone45 1 point 2 months ago

Hmmmm. I'm slightly confused. It seems that my PC and your display are related in some way or it is just some odd coincidence. I have a dell XPS 2710 AIO. It has a 27" 1440p monitor...

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 2 months ago

Just a coincidence in part numbering, they're not related at all, unless the Dell is also using a samsung 1440p display.

TelFiRE [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Good to know! I am coming from a 27" iMac... yeah I'm definitely going to have to return my BenQ when it arrives and get a Qnix or X-Star.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Yeah, it's basically that same screen from an iMac, but faster response, and no glass in front of it (unless you order a glossy one, but don't do that.)

Bseagull 2 points 5 months ago

Holy cow that's awesome!

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Very nice! How's the QNIX monitor? I've got an ASUS 1440p and I love it!

Also props to the red and black theme :)

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Love the QNIX. Was just really blown away by the quality for the price. I like it more than my Apple 27".

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Ya they are great monitors from what I hear. I just wanted to have the ability to turn it portrait style

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Yeah, I've seen pictures of folks taking the panels out of their cases and mounting them, but that's beyond how brave I am.

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Ya I'm considering doing it down the line but that requires me to purchase two more... which my wallet is screaming not to haha

xBlood_Monkey [7 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Three of the Qnix/X-Star monitors, plus a decent triple monitor arm is still cheaper than three of those Asus 1440p monitors. :p

RyneSmith [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Oh ya I know haha

SgtTherin [1 Build] 2 points 5 months ago

I like this :p gj m8

onlinefreak [1 Build] 2 points 5 months ago

That's a damn good system for $1200. Looks great too! +

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Heh, it's $2600 CAD :) You accidentally a line :)

onlinefreak [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Oh you gotta add those two totals, lol my bad.

jtc2793 1 point 5 months ago

I'm digging the lego star wars

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks! I play SWTOR, so just need the Sith Fury and my little mini set is complete :) My son and I build them together.

SrgtMacfly [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

thats a big mousepad

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks! It's machine washable too! Big fan of it.

Moops 1 point 5 months ago

What are your front red led fans? And how are they are intake? I wanted to do a similar front fan setup.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

They're Corsair AF 140mm Red LED Quiet versions. I only got them because I couldn't get the normal 140mm Quiets anywhere. There's the faintest red glow outside the front in the darkness, and a slight interior glow from them. They're intake because of the way they're put in.. the air flows around the front cover and into the case.

fnapoli [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

I've always seen the H100i fans push air through the rad and out the top of the case, but you seem to have cold air pulled through the top, through the rad, and then have warm rad-heated aired pushed inside the case... did that make sense? arent you just bringing hot air inside?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Well, the radiator itself never goes above 33C, so I'm bringing in slightly warmed air that's immediately exhausted by the 120mm fan at the rear. So cold air in through the front, where it's pushed over the video card and out the back, and in from the top where it's also pushed out the back. Whole system stays under 30C on the inside. It's also positive pressure (4 intake, 1 exhaust), so it should keep the dust out of the interior as well.

Everything I've read says that pull > push for radiators for cooling and cleaning, and that you want the coolest air possible over the rad. It's never going to be burning hot air, and nothing inside the case is sensitive to temps of 30-35 C.

fnapoli [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

oh ok, cool! i guess that makes sense. i am just used to seeing the fans the other way 'round. nice build, btw!

yongprodigy [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

like buttah! haha. nice build. jw what you did with the optical drive? the biggest drawback on these cases was the missing plate after the drive is installed.

+1 for keeping the clean look.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

I used the optical drive to install Windows 8.1, the motherboard drivers, and video drivers, and then I put it away until I need it again. I didn't want to break the clean look of the front of the case.

yongprodigy [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

I was considering that too but I burn a lot of CDs so it was a no go. Nice build.

yourmother117 [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Very nice build, perfect amount red inside not too much, not too little. But damn, where did you get such a cheap 1440p monitor???

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

Ebay - tons of sellers for Korean monitors. Got mine from green sum or something like that. $300 delivered to my door in 4 days.

Mediciu5 [2 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Looks awesome, grats on the firestrike score. Was that done pre or post overclock?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

That was done post-OC. Like I said, I pretty much just hit the Automatic buttons, and that's what it came up with. I'd love to hit 10k.

IBIubbleTea 1 point 5 months ago

Wait So you live in Vancouver?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Saskatoon. Tried to have parts shipped next-day expedited. Only my case arrived, the rest went on a sight-seeing trip across America.

Broadsky 1 point 5 months ago

How long did it take for the parts to arrive? Im only 2 hours away from Saskatoon.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Well, it was supposed to be 1 business day - NCIX is awesome at that. But UPS lost the 1 box in my shipment that contained all my components - so 10 days. Avoid UPS and you should get them in a couple of days.

ArrKayCee [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

This build is awesome, and don't take this the wrong way, but it hurts me on the inside that you didn't go 100% Corsair/Asus, all you needed really to have all main components be 100% Corsair/Asus was a Corsair PSU, Corsair RAM and a Corsair SSD.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 2 points 5 months ago

You know my OCD'ness! All the parts that aren't corsair were items I already had on hand. So when I add the 2nd 780, I'll switch to a Corsair AX860i for PSU, and my wife already knows I want Dominator Platinum ram for Christmas.

For SSD's, I had a Corsair in my old rig, but the Samsungs seem a little quicker. Maybe I'll switch to a pair of Corsair 500 mb ones in Raid 0 as my spring upgrade :)

ArrKayCee [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

That sounds awesome and 2nd 780? Nice!

spencerharden 1 point 5 months ago

how are thos fans working

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 3 points 5 months ago

Electricity and physics, mostly :) They're super quiet and awesome.

PacificNic [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

I prefer Razer peripherals in blue. That's the only reason I got a K90 over the BW Ultimate... LED color... Sweet build, though! I really want to build myself a new PC cause mine is outdated but I ain't gots no moneyz. That second 780 will kick ass :)

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Heh, I just ditched all my blue Razer gear for green! Mostly because the Orbweaver.. it's changed how I game. Also, the Naga 2014 is great - had a Logitech G600 that I thought I'd keep forever, but the new Naga is MILES ahead of the old ones.

PacificNic [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

You got a blue Blackwidow Ultimate lying around? ;D

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Just sold it :( I had 3 Razer keyboards, 3 mice, 2 keypads, and 2 headsets that just all went in the past 3 weeks :(

PacificNic [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

The Orbweaver seems nice. Aw sh!t. I really wanted to try one out. I wanted to see which switches I like better (My K90 has MX Reds). Oh well, nice build sir :)

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

I think I've been going with Browns up until this latest round of Razer gear - had a CM Storm mechanical keyboard that was great, but the paint wore off in a hurry. Whatever Razer has in the Orbweaver Stealth are AMAZING. they're not as clicky as a lot of switches, but still have a great feel to them. My wife appreciates the quietness more than anything.

PacificNic [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Are they Reds?

EDIT: PCPP has them listed as Brown switches

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Browns should be on the Stealth editions of Orbweaver and Black Widow - and Blues on the others I think. I get them all mixed up.

ilian11 [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

third build this year? What are you doing with all those builds?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

The first one I ended up selling, the second one is now running my living room - Steam and PLEX box, and this third one replaces the first one :)

I'll be cut off for awhile after this, my wife wants a new SUV next year.

junjaew [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

I love how it is all red and black. Looks awesome. +1

stnz [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

You got a good build yourself sir ;)

DewyHealy 1 point 4 months ago

Those fans look very suspicious

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Hmm? How so?

DewyHealy 1 point 4 months ago

i will just put it blunt for you they look like swastikas

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

the lights from the front fans? Weird, probably just how the camera caught them. In the real world it is just a general red glow.

ankrotachi10 1 point 4 months ago

What monitor is it you are using? I can't see it on the list. Either its not there or I am more tired than I realised.....

ankrotachi10 1 point 4 months ago

Oh never mind... I am more tired then I realised...

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

It's there - the QNIX 2710 Evolution II LED 2560x1440..

I bought mine from here Green Sum on Ebay for $300 shipped. They're $319 right now.

kingknight [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

hashtag Razer! Surprised you didn't go with a green scheme :( would've looked amazing! other than that, amazing build! +1

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Yeah, thought about a green theme, but I'm REALLY digging what ASUS is putting out lately, and my son's favorite colour is red.

kingknight [1 Build] 1 point 4 months ago

If you want to change to a green scheme i found a fly easy way; First you can repaint the rings on the fan to Green/UV Green ( I'm a fan of UV stuff ;) ) and you can also sleeve the cables yourself to green/UV Green or buy already sleeved ones from corsair ;)

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 4 months ago

Oooh, I may have to try that in the new year once I switch my PSU out from EVGA to Corsair!

hunter8793 [1 Build] 1 point 2 months ago

Is there anything wrong with the evga one? Is it quiet?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 2 months ago

Nothing wrong with it at all, just going for matching parts - Corsair/ASUS as much as possible. So RAM and PSU will become Corsair parts.

AminWinsGaming 1 point 2 months ago

So What RAM And PSU Will You Upgrade To ?

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 2 months ago

Corsair AX860i PSU, and Corsair Dominator RAM

Wr33kHav0c 1 point 1 month ago

I have a question about the power supply you are using. I have the same one, is it really okay to use just one of the pci connectors for the graphics card? I would think using 2 would spread the load better.

psherrard [Submitter] [4 Builds] 1 point 26 days ago

I'm just using 1 and it's fine. I'm thinking of moving out my 780 for 2 R9 290's, so we'll see how it goes.

PyroFuzion 1 point 9 days ago

Love the build!

TheBattlefieldBroski [1 Build] 1 point 2 days ago

Love the build man The Red and Black just pops don't it, Asus FTW!!! if you have a moment check out my Build if you get a chance too Cheers
