Description

Hi there :D This is the PC I put together. I built this for light web browsing and the occasional minecraft. Okay that was corny joke to start out with, please don't -1 and leave.

I wanted it to look good and perform well without going too overboard in price. Every penny of this build was paid for by selling things around the house :) I think I did a decent job finding deals, considering I had no idea what a motherboard actually did at the start of this, but definitely not the best.

Feel free to ask questions or tell me how awful my build is! I'd love to hear your feedback.

First off, it's important to note that after looking at these pictures my crappy camera took, it looks like the Corsair k70 is pink and the speakers, dragon on the Deathadder and the Headphones all kind of look orange. I assure you everything is deep bright red.

Sorry for lack of internal hardware pictures, I made this PC before I even knew about this site. What you're looking at is 4 months of hard, but fun work :)

Okay, now I know it's a long way below. Just don't look down, keep your head up! Slowly just scroll down and you'll be there soon. Good luck.

Here's my part list! Read what you want to know about:

CPU - The non-K version of the 4670. I really like a cool system and I think the extra 20 bucks really would have been for nothing. This is a great, powerful Intel chip if you're not willing to get the 4770.

CPU Cooler - Yeah, it's the one everyone has :P but there's a reason everyone has it. Even when I run Crysis 3 with FRAPs and chrome in the back it'll stay around 40 degrees. The installation of it was a little tricky, I'd make sure you watch a video of installation before you try it yourself, due to the fact there's 3 or 4 things that you can screw up.

Motherboard - This board is decent for the price I paid for it, $99 on eBay from Newegg. It has 1 chasis fan slot on the bottom and 2 in the middle of the board. This is kind of annoying if you have a top fan, like most people do. But as you can see in the picture, I hooked up the top megaflow on the right side, in the PSU fan slot. I think it should be okay. The LED is just as bright and it runs the same speed. This board does not SLI FYI.

Memory - One of the first things I bought, hence the ridiculous over-payment. I just needed 8GB; I'm not doing video editing or hosting servers or anything of the sort. It does the job fine.

SSD - Found it in the basement. My dad worked for a hardware company and he was nice enough to let me have it :D It's not the fastest SSD, if I had to buy one it would definitely be a Samsung EVO. Obviously though, a free SSD is pretty good too. Getting everything I had stored on my hard drive onto this SSD was hands down the worst part of this experience.

HDD's - The Samsung I also found laying around the house. I use it to store backups. The Western Digital was the first hard drive I bought and it's used for storing random junk I don't use too much, but am too afraid to get rid of :)

Video Card - WOW...let me take you on a journey. When I first started buying parts for my PC, I started off by buying an XFX 7750. I got greedy and returned it for a 650 ti boost. I loved it...but it still didn't quench my need for frames. Then I picked up the 760. I was amazed by its power and used it happily for a month...but then one day I saw a MSI GTX 770 OC edition for $289. I immediately picked it up and I could not be happier. If you are interested in a $200-$300 GPU this card is the way to go. It's silent, cool, and oh so powerful. Hands down my favorite part of this build.

Case - Its the one everyone has! :) It has plenty of room, looks nice and is very customizable. However, if I had a second chance at this build I'd probably get something sleeker and a bigger window. That new NZXT H440 looks mighty snazzy.

Case fan - Yeah, I overpaid for it. It was one of the first things I bought as well. It is pretty quiet and moves decent air. I'm not that impressed by it though.

PSU - This version is the non-modular. I knew I wouldn't have a problem though since the Storm Enforcer has a good amount of room to tie up those unwanted cables. I haven't had a problem with it and corsair makes great PSU's.

Optical Driver - The one everyone has!

Monitor - I bought this about 2 years ago for my console gaming. The response time is excellent and I love the thin screen edge. You don't realize how helpful 1ms response time is until you come from an 8ms 56 inch TV! However, this monitor took quite a while to find that sweet spot when it comes to color, contrast, and sharpness. I'm still not sure to this day that I've even found it. The color is kind of bluish and no matter how long I mess with the settings I can't get rid of it. It's only a slight annoyance, but I don't think I can confidently recommend this monitor.

Corsair Vengeance K70 - Cherry MX Red switches really feel incredible after typing on a rubber-dome keyboard your entire life. Before this keyboard I had a peak of about 65 WPM. Now, with a little practice on the mech keys, I'm up to a peak of 103 WPM. Not only does it help your typing, it helps your gaming and it looks sweet too. As you can see in the picture, I don't have the red 'D' gaming key. That's because the A,1,6 and D keys are all slightly slanted on the end so your fingers fit in there nicely for gaming. However, I don't want to constantly switch out the keys, so I just leave all the gaming keys in save the 'D' so it doesn't restrain my middle finger and I can easily go from gaming to typing.

Mouse - This is the Dragon Age II edition of the black Razer Deathadder. Dragon Age II wasn't as well received as Origins, but I still think it's a good game. Inquisition looks amazing, however, and this mouse will be great for playing it :D I much prefer the glossy compared to the 2013 material. 2013 was made for grip, however my hands would always slide on that thing! My hands rarely, if ever, sweat. So as long as you clean it regularly, it's a great mouse!

Speakers - I bought these to go with the color scheme, obviously :P They are the only red speakers I could find, but surprisingly, they sound great as well! The only gripe I have with them is that the Blue LED on them is BRIGHTER THAN SIRIUS I kid you not. You have to wonder how some things make it through to production stage. Anyways, I spent 15 minutes opening up the wretched thing and putting black electrical tape over it. Even then, the LED shines through lol but it looks much much better. But yeah, they sounds surprisingly great!

Headset - Steel Series Siberia V2 pretty much comes in any color I think except green. These headphones are light and sound pretty good too. If you want to buy a set, buy it on eBay from one of the Chinese sellers! I know it sounds sketchy, but the one I got was brand new and wasn't a cheap rip-off! 36 bucks you can't go wrong.

Second Monitor - Acer G245HQ. Good chance you won't buy it. It was also found in the magical basement of hardware and I don't use it for gaming. Just really handy for school work and temperature monitoring. Also, watching a Twitch stream and doing something else :P

Wireless USB - This little guy is cheap and works great. I think Amazon has it listed for 20 bucks, check it out if you need one. I wish I could get wired internet, but AT&T installed our home internet so the router had to be hooked up in one spot, downstairs :/

Mousepad - Steel Series one that hasn't got those annoying shriveled edges at all in the 3 months I've had it. Not a bad buy for 9 bucks.

Monitor Stand - I bought mine from Outlet PC on eBay. They offer best offer and will negotiate down to about $44. I couldn't be happier with it. Very sturdy, very flexible. You can one single monitor up, it has to be both, hence the lopsided monitor thing I have goin' on :D If you are looking for a great stand like this, look for the double hand tightening screws on the bottom. Highly recommend this one.

LED Strip - Really cheap and really bright. It is really easy to install pretty much anywhere on your case where you can fit it. It is attached by Velcro. Really easy way to make you feel as if your PC is cooler.

Webcam - Really surprised with this webcam. Movement response is great and has a lot setting customization. Definitely would recommend for Skype and giving your daily slightly unintentional moonings to the NSA.

Okay good, you made it. I was starting to worry you had gotten lost up there.

Unless you're crazy and read all of that (and by the way I love you if you did), I'll sum it up as saying I'm extremely pleased with all of these components. The monitor's color is a little off, but that's about my only gripe. I'm also very upset I can't run Red Alert Command & Conquer.

Favorite parts of this build that I can't recommend enough are the MSI GTX 770 OC, Corsair K70 and monitor stand.

If you're interested, some frame rates: Heaven Benchmark Extreme: 39.5 FPS Valley Benchmark Extreme: 47.2 FPS

Really nice and solid build. And yesh, I did read everything :P

I'll add you on Steam, I have MW3, CS:GO and TF2 currently. I'd buy more games but my rig won't be able to handle any of it :C

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 3 points 10 months ago

Haha did you really? You're awesome.

Sweet I play a little CS and TF2 as well.

Nice build and I like your room too.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks man, I also have a cherry ludwig set next to the guitars. I'll take a picture of it all together.

nada190 [3 Builds] 2 points 10 months ago

Now I REALLY LIKE your room.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

:D The amp I have is a Fender Mustang. It can hook up to my PC and I can record music straight onto my computer!

Microshrimp [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

I love how you incorporated the Beast theme into your build with that tiger desktop background, very classy move!

Man, I love that room-- everything just looks really high quality with the instruments in the corner, like a recording studio or something. Great looking build! +1

Thanks for the write-up about the K70 keyboard. I've been thinking about buying that keyboard, but was worried the curve on the gaming WASD keys might feel weird when typing. So leaving the D off is enough to make it feel ok? I also thought about trying to use replacement WASD keys from another Brand. Rosewill sells a kit for about $10 (actually on sale for $6 right now on NewEgg). The other keyboard I'm considering is one of the Cooler Master mechanical keyboards for about the same price.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

Haha the Beast in the title is kind of a joke. I always see people putting beast in their title and people in the comments will say how it sort of annoys them, so I did it to get under their skin :P Yeah thanks man my room is pretty sweet. Both of those guitars I got for 10 bucks total from garage sales; $5 a piece :D A fender and a greg bennett. My set is a ludwig I got for 400 5 years ago. And yeah the keyboard is great. Your left pinky and ring fingers aren't obstructed by the curved W and A, unlike the curved D which was such an annoyance. I've been lucky enough to test a few mech keyboards. Corsair keyboards look and feel better to me personally. If you want a red and black with Red cherry switches keyboard this is no doubt your bet, if you have the penny of course.

Microshrimp [1 Build] 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah, I get the joke-- I should have put a wink face or something after that because I was just playing back at you. :)

That's a great garage sale find! I played guitar a little bit when I was younger, but haven't played in 15 years-- I've since then forgotten everything I knew pretty much. I actually own the guitar that got me interested in guitar though. My next door neighbor when I was about 13 years old bought it from the girl who used to babysit me as a kid, and he was REALLY GOOD at guitar. I'd go over to his house and watch him play that thing for hours. We all since moved on, but I looked up the guy a few years ago and asked him about that guitar and he still had it. He didn't play it much over his newer ones though and he ended up selling it to me! It needs some new electronics, but I have all the replacement parts-- just need to find time to mess with it. It's just a Squire Stratocaster, but it's one of the earlier ones from the 80's, which I hear are better. I'm just excited to own the actual guitar that I fell in love with as a kid.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 10 months ago

Ah haha I wasn't too sure.

Oh, yeah? That's pretty sweet. Yeah I'm not that good anyways. I just know a few tunes.

WOW the description on your build is twice as long as mine! I thought mine was one of the longest on this site, apparently not :P

Cruhx 2 points 10 months ago

A lot like the build I'm going to order in a week or so!

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 10 months ago

Sweet dude, message me if you have any questions and such :D

DeanTheDJ 2 points 9 months ago

Damn, this looks great. I'll add you on steam just as soon as i finish putting my PC together. Definitely not on this level, but it's pretty close (i7 4770 (no k) / asus gtx 650 ti 2gb / 1tb HDD (64mb cache)) Great build though. If I can remember, I'll add you on steam though. Mind messaging me to just give me a heads up? I forget a lot :p I'm planning on getting Dayz Standalone, Garry's Mod (prop hunt, TTT, etc) and some others.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 9 months ago

Sweet dude! Yeah I have DayZ right now...I'm really hoping they add means of transportation soon. Running across the map to meet buddies takes like a half hour :/

DeanTheDJ 1 point 9 months ago

What's your steam name, bro? I'll add you right now. I just got my new PC put together, it's sweet!

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 9 months ago

Syzygy. I don't have a profile pic. I should probably put one on there. I played recently Black Ops, Loadout, Skyrim and DayZ. If you can't find me, I'll just search your's if that's easier.

And awesome man! You should upload it to the site!

DeanTheDJ 1 point 9 months ago

Quite a bit of "Syzygy"'s, lol.

My steam is DeanTheDJ. And yea, I'm gonna upload a few pics in a bit.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 9 months ago

I'm the one with the blue guy now. But yeah I'll send you a request.

notacar 2 points 9 months ago

Really good build. I read everything and now I wish I had a magical basement.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 9 months ago

Hahahaha you're awesome.

Krasniye [1 Build] 2 points 9 months ago

Really sweet build man! I need aprox $55 more until I can build a semi-similar rig. I can't afford the 770 though so I'm just going to go with a 760. Case, lighting, keyboard, desk, and EVERYTHING looks really sweet! Maybe sometime we can play some games on ultra and laugh at everyone who decided to buy an Xbox One or a PS4 :P (Well, maybe when I graduate from this cruddy laptop that is)I also read the whole thing!

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks for the comment dude, I appreciate it. I can't believe you would read all of that! Why don't you make a saved parts list of the build you're shooting for and I'll look it over.

Krasniye [1 Build] 1 point 9 months ago

Hey man, sorry haven't been on the site for awhile. I have had my part list for quite awhile now and you can have a look here: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Krasniye/saved/3paf

purple_ninja123 1 point 8 months ago

I love this build so much. Plus your description was well worth reading. It really helped me pick the parts for my first build. I don't know if you like links posted to your comments or not but this is what i have so far. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/34jcN

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

That build looks awesome. Except one thing, that PSU is wayyyyy too much! You don't need 860 platinum unless you are running SLI and heavy overclocking. You can easily save 100 bucks right there to put towards something else.

Also, I'm looking to swap my case for a new one because there's a part I'm going to get that won't fit in this storm enforcer. Would you be interested to buy mine? I can give you 3 200mm red LED megaflows as well! I bought one for the top, and got a replacement for the front for free, just because it's a bit loud.

purple_ninja123 1 point 8 months ago

That would be great! Ya I just realized that I'm kind of new to the whole building part of computers. And ya I would love to work something out for buying your case.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

Awesome. Firstly, when do you need it? Because I'll need to buy a new case before I ship this one out, ya know?

MaskedGamers 1 point 8 months ago

Cool. Nice build and guitars. Not much I would change.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 8 months ago

Thank you!

Curtis187 1 point 7 months ago

Really nice build, I have chosen the same case as I too want the black and red themed set up.

My steam is http://steamcommunity.com/id/itzzcurtis/ I cant find yours aha

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 2 points 7 months ago

Thanks man! Have you already gotten your case?

Curtis187 1 point 7 months ago

I'm buying this month :)

Hakuro [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

This is a really cool build. I'm currently working on my first one ever and you happen to use the same cpu, mobo, and gpu that I'm planning to buy. However, the gpu is currently at $330 which is almost as low as it gets these days.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

Thank ya! Yeah the GPU will drop to $320 for a bit I think. Also, sometimes Newegg will include a free game with the purchase so you might look for that. Even if you don't like the game you might be able to sell it for 10 bucks on eBay or something like that.

I'm really not that crazy about the motherboard. Make sure it's fitting your needs well before buying it.

Also what type of case are you looking at?

Hakuro [1 Build] 1 point 7 months ago

I bought the corsair 500r white version for $79 from newegg awhile ago. This mobo is the best h87 board I found with enough case fan connectors for this case. I didn't really care if I had a window and I prioritized silence and cooling for the case. A friend who owned the 400r said this series is ridiculously good at both of those things, so this is what I got.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Cool I can't wait to see it!

Haik24 1 point 6 months ago

What mousepad is that?

MrFlamingNinjaGuy [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

What is that desk? I like it and i think it would go great with a mini itx system that i am in the process of building.

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 5 months ago

Sorry man I don't know my father got it years and years ago

TrevorPhilips.inc 1 point 5 months ago

What is your desk?

ItzExide 1 point 1 month ago

How is that 770 Goin for ya and what kinda frames does it get on BF4 Just if you have it or on Any game you have!

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 1 month ago

I get 60 FPS with Ultra settings and Sweetfx at about 65 degrees. What is your price range? the 770 is on newegg for like $240 and the 780 is going for $293.

ItzExide 1 point 1 month ago

My Price Range is about 1600 Max so I need to find the best parts for the best price mainly for Arma 2 OA Max and ETC games that take A Beast GPU and A Best CPU!

zSyzygy [Submitter] [1 Build] 1 point 1 month ago

I'd pick up a $300 780 ASAP

ItzExide 1 point 1 month ago
